    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...h-English-in-training-or-face-club-fines.html

I think it's good that we try to convince players to make the effort to speak English, however, it's not really a warm welcome to threaten players with fines when they've only been here for 5 mins.

If they had been here for a significant amount of time and shown no effort to learn English, then fair enough, but for gods sake this isn't really encouraging stuff.

Pardew says in the article that these players don't have time to settle and need to perform now, and I think we all agree on this, but I just don't think fining players this early will help.

I think he has to do this. And the players have to. Still, hope there's no cliques formed but I could already sense them formed I think. Cabaye Debuchy, Jonas Colo, Obertan Gouffran, the Africans..

Absolute necessity for me. I'm sure they are adult enough to understand. I know this is something Bobby used to demand and the fine system is pretty common. Unfortunately with the very nature of footballers, the only thing they respond to nowadays is their pocket! I think Wenger has a fine system about not speaking English, mobile phones and countless other things. SAF likewise. Its just to get them to be disciplined and professional, so Pardew isn't exactly re-inventing the wheel here.

"None of the five French players signed by the club this month have a good understanding of the language and Pardew has insisted they pick it up as soon as possible . . .

. . . only allowed to communicate in English on the training pitch and in the dressing room, with instructions translated by those French speaking players, like Yohan Cabaye, who have gained a grasp of the new language. "

It sounds like the players have been told to learn English as quickly as possible and been told that they will be fined if they don't, not that penalties are in place at the moment

It's not like you need a lot of English to play in the premier-league though is it?

    "To me"
    "To you"
"Chucklevision was on again last night. Simply marvelous the way those two genii capture the themes of hilarity and misunderstanding, it really is wonderful"

    That's all they need...

Arrived in Newcatle January 2000. I became a Newcastle supporter more or less immediately, but have large gaps in my knowledge of matters toon related before then.

Why would Peter Beardsley be skint ?

In the interview today Pards said he didn't think there were cliques and he's making an effort to avoid this. I remember a video from last year showing cabaye & tiote being chummy, so get sissoko in on that friendship and a nice central midfield love in could ensue.

    Fine me!:bandit:<doh>

He tended to mumble quite a bit. A really nice humble kind of guy though, never set himself up as a superstar and look down on people.

    I'm not sure I follow.

I do know that he's known for beign seen doing this like set out the cones for a kids match that you wouldn't expect to see a full England international to be doing, and he's seemed like a good bloke the couple of times I've heard him talk, but why would that mean that he'd be skint now ?

He must have earned a decent whack, and doesn't look like the sort that would piss it away.
