It's ARSE not ass. It's CENTRE not CENTER.

Dutch started this because of my comment "smartass" in another thread when I was merely referring to Equus africanus asinus.

It's quite acceptable to correct a mod when they're wrong. I've just googled the conjugations of the verb to lend, and they agree with me. (In the event some smart arse shows me I was on an American site, I was referring to Easter. :p)

Good question. Why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? Why is it when you send stuff on a vehicle its called a shipment and goods in ships are called cargo? What mysteries.

In the American defense you dont really speak english anyway. We both speak languages that are derived from a language that originated in England. The fact there are so many versions of that more ancient language and all those versions are so similar is probably something one could do a PHD thesis on.

Actually, by definition we DO speak English, assuming you were born there, you speak a version of English that has a few hundred years influence from other foreigners since we abandoned you. :p

What you're referring to is old English but English itself is a living language that evolves, but this thread is more about what's written.

A lot of the difference in spelling, such as centre and defence, are due to cock ups when the Americans tried to write their own dictionary but ballsed up the root of the words.
