Harry Redknapp tells QPR fans to lay off Tony Fernandes

    Simon Johnson

    28January 2013

Harry Redknapp claims Queens Park Rangers fans are making a big mistake if they continue to take their frustration out on chairman Tony Fernandes and force him to quit the club.

Fernandes (above) admitted yesterday via his Twitter account that he will leave if he can’t fix the problems at Loftus Road. The Air Asia owner, who took over in 2011, was responding to heavy criticism from supporters following their 4-2 defeat by MK Dons in the FA Cup fourth round.

Redknapp said: “It will be a big blow if he ever left and he is trying to put right what has gone wrong.”

Fans have held the board responsible for a number of key decisions that have backfired, including the appointment of former manager Mark Hughes in January last year and the quality of signings.

When asked if the fans should be careful about chasing Fernandes away, Redknapp said: “Yes, you won’t get a better man. He loves the club. They are fortunate to have a chairman like him. He is pulling out all the stops to get a couple of players.”

One of those players is believed to be Porto defender Rolando after Anton Ferdinand was allowed to join Bursaspor on loan for the rest of the season. Chunnam Dragons defender Yun Suk-Young is having a hearing over a work permit tomorrow, while Redknapp has not given up on buying West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie.

Redknapp also suggested that Fernandes should delete his Twitter account in order to avoid the abuse.

I'm sorry, cant take this seriously. Tony is and has been acting most irresponsibly in his position as CEO of Queens Park Rangers. His tweeting has very nearly cost him all the respect and endearment that I and many had/have for him, his latest smacks of "prove that you love me or else I'm off", sorry but that's not too different from Flavio.
Many here statting that this is the best chairman in our history - why? - He took over a club newly promoted to the Premiership -during his tenure he has allowed the massive investment in SWP, Anton, Barton, Young, Diakite, Mbia, Zamora, Johnson, Dyer, Gabiddon, Traore, Nelsen, Hoillett, Granero, Green, Cesar, Cisse, Bosingwa, Remy, Park - many say this is the best squad ever assembled at Loftus Road, but how many of these would get into any other Premiership side?
I'd say Mbia, Hoillett, Granero, Cesar and Remy - now that's a 25% hit rate and of those 5 only 3 have shown their true worth (have to give it to Remy).

On top of this he kept with the clueless one when it was so clear to all and sundry he was a drunk driver of a Manager!

There has not been 1 player come through the ranks or even close, we're still at Harlington and we're still losing to teams 2 Divisions lower than us in the Cups.

Yes he has invested and so did Chris Wright - If I had a crystal ball and if I could have one wish on top of that, it would be for Mittal to take over full control allowing Amit to become CEO. I would never hope to abuse anybody in life as that is a disgusting way of living this wonderfully short life - however Tony has shown little class in the role and he's over his head, I'm sure he's a lovely person and comes accross that way but IMO the position of CEO of QPR is a step too far for his tool box.

I hope I stand corrected and that this latest gamble (which should have started after the West Ham home game) pays off, however he has made some major cock ups which he has admitted and showing no signs of changing his modus operandi to get it right.

Message to Tony - Concentrate on your 3 business' FFS and leave the Twitter permanently to TWATS!! I have absolutely no wish to see a decent man pour a large fortune down the drain on us, please behave as befits the position.

In Harry's Great Escape we Trust - Come on you rrrrrrrrrrrs and good luck Anton with your next adventure.

Tony Fernandes appointed Harry, so you're in safe hands there. That'll be the Harry Redknapp who had managerial spells at Bournemouth, West Ham, Posrtsmouth and Southampton, shortly before each of them went bust.

Pretty rapid acceleration required to have achieved that tbh. The youth set up will take ages to bear fruit. At least he has invested in it for the future.

My thoughts exactly. On other forums you'd instantly be sounded out by the old boys club and told to go and follow Chelsea for words like this. Honestly, criticizing fernandes sometimes seems to stir up a Satanic Verses-like reaction from a lot of fans, when all honest fans like Danish are is genuinely concerned because they want the best for the team. I just wrote pretty much the same words on another post. I think we all like Fernandes and appreciate that he really is trying and really does have the clubs best interests to heart, but he needs to control his ambitions and manage the long term running of the club in a more football-oriented manner or else we will continue to make the same mistakes we have every transfer window since he came to the club.

It's nice to see that he is trying to put right what he's done wrong. But both Harry and Tony need to recognize that we also like to see them put up a fight for the club and not express how they HATE those supporters who speak their minds a bit. We as fans are testing them as well, and I hope they see that! Yeah it's all wonderful what with the Twatter generation being able to "communicate" and express their feelings in both directions - fans to owners and owners to fans, etc - but really - as an Owner of the club, wouldn't it be better to just keep these feelings of dread a secret rather than let it out and make the situation worse? You must have a bit more tact, Tony, surely? That's a test, Tony. We want to you to tough it out with us.

Can't see what the problem with TF is. As a fan, all you want of your chairman is for him to back the manager. Yes he appointed Hughes - but at the time, I and many others thought Hughes was a safe pair of hands as he had a decent track record. Nobody could have seen his tenure turning out like it did. TF backed him in all those signings. I don't remember too many complaints from fans at the time as all these players came through the door to enhance Warnock's threadbare squad (who himself was operating with his hands tied under the last knockings of Briatore's reign). Who would have predicted that players of the calibre of Park, Granero, Onuoha, Hoillet, Ferdinand, Barton Wright-phillips, Zamora, Cisse and Bosingwa would prove so utterly ****e the moment they pulled on the hooped shirt. That's where the blame lies - with woefully underperforming big name players. Out of that lot, only Barton was a risk and Bosingwa widely regarded as over-rated. They're the only two buys I'd have had serious doubts about if I was chairman. But TF backed both Warnock and Hughes with serious investment. And now he's doing the same with Harry. Yes, we'd have all liked Hughes to have gone 3 or 4 games earlier but aside from that I can't see that any of this is TF's fault

Errrrrrr....... No Tony did not back NW with money. He sacked him, in the best position we'd been in with the minimal squad he had!!!

He backed him with the signings of Barton, SWP, Ferdinand. And then we went into something of a freefall so he went for someone with PL experience. Be honest, no-one would have envisaged that was the best position we were going to be for a season and a half. Too easy to look at things in hindsight. I loved Warnock - and always will do for what he did at QPR - but at the time, I thought it was the right call to get an experienced Prem manager in, even though it turned out (near) disastrous.
