Newcastle have been linked again with French midfielder William Vainqueur, who we were linked with earlier this month. The player was born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in France (where else? ) and started his career at Nantes, before joining Belgium club Standard Liege in August of 2011 on a five year contract, and he has one cap for the France U21 side, which he picked up back in 2009.

The defensive midfielder stands 5’11″ tall and has so far played 66 times for Liege and scored four goals in the Jupiler Pro League. Earlier in the month Southampton were also interested in the player but we’re not sure whether the south coast club are still interested in Vainqueur.

Newcastle could be interested because it seems the player has recently fallen out with the Liege coach Mircea Rednic, who said this about his player a couple of weeks ago:

“I’ve told Vainqueur he needs to take more responsibility.”

Newcastle are preparing an offer for the 24-year-old midfielder, according to the Belgian daily Derniere Heure.

Vainqueur is said to be rated at around £2.5M, and he has a five year deal at Liege which runs out in 2016, but it does seem that Newcastle are still trying to bring in new players in January.

Of course Newcastle could be interested in the player for a summer transfer, although the club have already brought in five Frenchman so far in this January transfer window.

He’s another Frenchman – so we suppose that makes it possible he could be joining Newcastle before next Friday rolls around.

Yet another CM... then agin, this would allow Abeid to go on loan, and Gosling to just go... and would mean we could play 3 cms and have appropriate back-up for each.

We should go for a Brazillian or a Korean just to mix things up a bit.

Seems there might be some substance to this - lot's of tweets in last hour or so, these ones from more reliable twitterers:

We understand that #NUFC have enquired about the availability of #Standard Liege's French central midfielder William #Vainqueur. #Newcastle

#Vainqueur Update: RMC have just reported it after us! The player would be available for about €2.5m. #NUFC One for the future.

I know very well William Vainqueur because he is a ex-FC Nantes player. Very good player, fast and technical. Perfect for EPL. #NUFC

The acquisition of another central midfielder would be handy as Gael isn't ready for this level yet and Abied is as raw as players get and Dan Gosling isn't very good. But the positions of centre forward left wing forward, centre half and probably a replacement for Forster (Butland) are more important.
