Colombian girl shocks the world

A ten year old girl in Colombia has shocked many in her country and around the world as reports claim that she has given birth to a 5 and half pound baby. According to the report she came to a hospital, bleeding, in pain and gave birth without any advance care. Univision’s Primer Impacto is reporting that this was the first time she visited a hospital during her pregnancy, however details are sketchy and the girl has not been named. But as the news spread it led to shock and horror amongst people across the world as there is very little information available on the girl, the baby, the father or how such a little girl ended up getting pregnant.

Wayuu tribe

The report has stated that the girl belonged to the Wayuu tribe which can be exempt from Colombian law in some cases. Experts have argued that this is not something new for a member of the Wayuu tribe and the problem is growing. “We’ve already seen similar cases of Wayuu girls,” Efraín Pacheco Casadiego, director of the hospital where the girl gave birth, told RCN La Radio noticias,. “At a time when (they) should be playing with dolls, they go to having to take care of a baby. It’s shocking.”

Dont give a F**K what tribe, race, religion or where you are from...THAT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG !

 

Whoa whoa whoa. Who are you to judge? Who are you to IMPOSE your views from the OUTSIDE world? Not only that, you live in NZ! Why not leave that land and give it back to the natives? Before people around the world started living longer and the lifespan expanded beyond the age of 30, it was common for people, even as young as this girl's age, if able, to have children. That was the ways of survival of the tribe. There are still parts of the world that are untouched by outside forces. The fact that she even came to a hospital in a modern city is unbelievable.

 

Quite correct, but now we DO live beyond the age of 30 and therefore, it is wrong isn't it?

 

Western Society deems it wrong.....but you can hardly say to a tribe that have no contact with the civilsed world that what they are doing is wrong...they know no better.

Of course it's not right to us as civilised people but we should also understand that parts of Colombia aren't as civilised as us.
When I went travelling around Colombia and Guatemala I was told not to travel to certain areas of the country because it wasn't safe to do so (And I don't mean 'cos of the drugs trade or Civil War).
Turned out the week before, 3 tourists were stabbed and burnt to death by the local tribe. Their crime was to take a photo of a child in the village, and it was believed by the tribesmen that the camera was attempting to 'steal the soul' of the child, thus causing their grisly end.

Utter madness to us, but completely logical to them.

 

Perhaps we should just stick with football discussions then?

Whilst DT's more than capable of speaking for himself, I hope he'll forgive me for intervening on this occasion.

He's not suggesting child sex / early parenthood is acceptable in western or most other societies. He's saying that as disgusting as it is to our modern way of thinking, it happens and all too often. DT's point is about the contradictions / hypocrisy in both our personal and collective responses to the issue affecting us as parents etc. as against what we all know goes on in the seedier corners of our cities and the internet - and our passivity on that level.

However, there are still a fair few societies (and not just the more primitive tribal ones) that don't recognise an age of consent and live along the lines that the female does what she's told, horrendous as this seems to most of us with a mind to, as you say, our mothers, sisters and daughters.

As such this Columbian 'revelation' is a sensationalist non-story. Like 'honour' killings, female circumcision etc., it is probably not the sort of thing we ought to be discussing on here since it only serves to wind ourselves up. After all, there's not much if anything most of us can do to question let alone prevent what are sadly fairly common practices.

If a baby were to develop in a child that size they would both die.

It is a story that comes out if South America! Where 60% of people believe in the Chupacabra, a half man half rat creature!
