Redknapp seeks to delay Nelsen exit

    26 January 2013-PA Sport

Manager Harry Redknapp refuses to concede defeat in his battle to keep defender Ryan Nelsen at Queens Park Rangers for as long as possible.

    Nelson retires from international duty

Nelsen has been appointed head coach of Toronto FC and the Major League Soccer club expects him to start work on 1 February, ensuring Wedesday's (AEDT) Barclays Premier League clash with Manchester City will be his final game for Rangers.

When the 35-year-old announced at the start of the month that he would be leaving, Redknapp expected to keep a player he values highly until the latter stages of the relegation battle.

While he is resigned to losing him far sooner, he wants the New Zealand international to be available for the crucial showdown with Norwich City at Loftus Road on 2 February.

"I need to speak to Ryan, I need him here for the Norwich game," said Redknapp, who revealed Nelsen will be rested for Sunday FA Cup tie against MK Dons.

"I thought we were talking March 1 when I spoke to Ryan last. Suddenly this has all changed. I'm hoping we can put it back a few days.

"He's been away all week in Canada doing some work for his new club I need him next week - we're desperately short and I need Ryan to play.

"He's got a job to go to and wants to crack on with that. He felt it's an opportunity that may never come along for him again.

"I can understand where he's coming from because it's his future, but I wish he was staying because there haven't been too many better players than him here this year."

Surely we're not going to name him in the squad of 25 for one game?

Agree - Doesn't make sense to keep him in the 25 for one game - he has been a fine servant........
If we have had 11 players on the pitch this season with the same fight and determination as Nelson the we would be in this predicament - fact......
All the best for the future Ryan..........

Sounds to me as though Harry is a little pissed off with him.

Be honest, there are probably at least four players in the squad you wouldn't want to have to play, so one vacant spot isn't really going to make any difference...

I think it would be worth it till the end of Feb, but as Nelsen seems to have gone back on that agreement I'm not sure it's worth it for one game.

also shows that HR has no defenders lined up that he is so desperate to keep him for one game?

We need to keep him. Like WBA need to keep Odemthingie. Nelsen's contracted to us so Toronto will have to wait. Only if we find a few decent CB's in the next few days, should we let Nelsen go.

TFC knew Nelsen was under contract when they signed him. Nelsen knew he was too - he's our and Toronto can wait

Can one of our rich owners just buy Toronto and then get a six month interim manager in just to keep him here?

What if he has a release clause for coaching/managing jobs?

Agreed. He signed a contract. I'm less than happy with him tbh.

What about loaning Hughes to Toronto until the end of the season?
