I've never quite believed that the Hull Sunday league was the biggest in the country - when I played in it, it had 18 or 19 divisions but has shrunk somewhat in the past twenty years since then.. Can''t believe even at its height it was numerically bigger than the equivalent in a bigger city such as Manchester or Birmingham for example.
When I played in it, I think it was approaching about 24/25 divisions with 12 teams in each division, that's a hell of a lot of players waking up on a sunday morning with a sore head! That's when going out on a weekend into Hull city centre was popular. Getting back to the Sunday league thing though, Hull and the east riding does cover a huge area and so takes in lots of teams, were as Leeds or Bradford have there own sunday leagues with probably only half the amount of the Hull Sunday League. I dare say that goes for places like manchester/Birmingham etc, where there might be more individual sunday leagues but with less teams in them...am I making sense?...probably best to ask Wally Oust.
