This entire saga stinks of corruption somewhere. If he retires we retain his registration and peruse it legally. AWigan Rl player, Gareth hock tried similar and it hasn't ended the way he wanted. If you take the mega money contract you need to honour it.!!

Never mind the coals - we should drag his dad naked over the ****ing Andes for this treachery. He's really ****ed me off.

I didn't think I could hate Colo but that day appears to have come. Sad times.

In all fairness its his old man that's causing all the aggro. Colo himself has not come out to the press directly and said he wants to leave, all we've heard is what San Lorenzo are saying and what is coming out of NUFC. Do we actually know for a fact that he's asked to leave, or do all we know is that there is a situation that needs sorting because of his loud mouthed fatha ?

Anyone else think that Colo has made up these personal reasons to force a move to San Lorenzo?

Simple. He's decided to retire as a player and assume a role of scout for Newcastle and is headed to Argentina to begin scouting duties.

Deathly silence (or at least lack of confirmation) from Lee Ryder, Mark Douglas etc suggests the local journos don't know whether or not he has walked. No paper other than The Independent carrying the story. No direct quotes in the story itself. I would have thought if he had walked more would know of it... especially the locals. Clutching at straws? Holding onto hope.

Will lose a lot of respect for Colo if he has walked, but will wait till its confirmed as I don't think he is the kind of person to do that.....

    From NUFC.com today.

    FC United?
    not any more...

    From The Independent, Wednesday:

Fabricio Coloccini is heading out of Newcastle United after he told officials he does not want to play another game for the club.
The 31-year-old captain now plans to leave Tyneside in his desire to return home to Argentina as he bids to deal with "personal matters". Coloccini's wife is already believed to have returned home to Argentina.

Talks had taken place earlier this week between Coloccini's representatives and officials from Newcastle in a bid to broker a peace deal where the central defender would stay at St James' Park until the end of the season, at which point his position would be reassessed.

However, after extensive discussions they failed to reach agreement and now the player is set to quit.

In the background to all this was the vocal interest of the Argentinian side San Lorenzo, for whom Coloccini played on loan in the 2000-01 season. Coloccini's father Osvaldo also works at the club.

They have not been able to find the funding to buy the player from Newcastle, who are currently embroiled in a fight for their Premier League future. Coloccini's £60,000-a-week salary is way out of their budget. They were similarly unable to negotiate a transfer fee for the player.

A statement from the Argentinian club confirmed defeat in their ambitious attempts to sign the Newcastle captain.

"Finally, after long negotiations, we announce that Fabricio Coloccini will not join the roster of San Lorenzo," it read. "It is not possible to release the Newcastle player, and therefore the club will look for another alternative to strengthen the defence."

That was seen in some quarters as offering the possibility of Coloccini staying at Newcastle. However, the player, who first told club officials of his desire to quit Tyneside on 10 January, has instead reaffirmed his decision to end his four-and-a-half years at St James' Park.

Coloccini was signed for £10.3 million from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna when Kevin Keegan was in charge in 2008. Newcastle were relegated to the Championship that season but he excelled during the following campaign when Newcastle won promotion and then established himself as one of the most cultured central defenders in the Premier League the season after.

He signed a new Newcastle contract in March 2012 and was voted into the PFA team of the year, but the last few months have been troubled for the Argentine and he now plans to return home. Coloccini does not intend to play against Aston Villa in Tuesday's crucial relegation battle at Villa Park – their next game – but Newcastle could have half a new team in place by then.

    Wow.

It's important to stress that Colo is now in breach of his contract and Newcastle retain his registration, meaning that he won't get paid and cannot play for anyone else.

However that will be cold comfort the next time we take to the field and a half-fit Steven Taylor or out-of-form Mike Williamson is in the starting XI.

From our perspective, there would be more sympathy for Colo had he emulated Shay Given's departure from SJP almost exactly four years ago, having grown tired of propping up a perpetually underachieving team.

As it is though, there's a feeling that we've been left in the lurch by a player who was handsomely rewarded for his four and a half years of service, but produced many fine performances over the 175 games he featured in.

Whichever way you look at it, it's a sad end to the career of one of Newcastle's most successful overseas signings.

The loss of our club captain piles further pressure on new boy Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to hit the ground running and threatens to undermine the transfer business completed so far this month.

We began this window with Alan Pardew declaring his intention to recruit another central defender, a soundbite was interpreted as an addition to the squad rather than a replacement as it now looks. Whether there's any sort of contingency plan in place to strengthen in that vital area before January 31st remains to be seen.

PS: Quite what effect this news has on the future of Colo's fellow countryman Jonas Gutierrez is unclear.

Not a whisper on BBC. Skysports is denying it.

The whole thing has been nonsense from word go. Colo is clearly unhappy but there is no indication he is being other than entirely professional

Colo has apparently turned up for training. #nufc

There's also some random guy on twitter saying he's spoken to colo in person and Colo confirmed he was staying and playing until summer at least:

    Nicolas LeClerque ‏@Clark5Nick

Just spoke to the man himself. Colo stays. Def til summer, not sure after that.

Re Coloccini: have it on good authority San Lorenzo made no direct contact at all with #Nufc. So who were their "long negotiations" with?

The media is having a field day. Getting ridiculous. Nobody knows exactly what is going on so in the great tradition of journalistic integrity, they make things up.

A report that Coloccini has already flown to Argentina was met with the comment: Must of been a quick bloody flight then, he's at training this morning.
