So the other day something on the news comes up about how Women footballers are moaning that they only get £20000 a year when male footballers can earn that in a few days or even hours in some cases. Now these women were full england internationals, the top stars in the game so those who would b considered average pro's are on less than NMW. Are they right to moan? For me its a big no. The best players in the mens game may get £100000+ a week but this is a very recent thing when compared with the history of the game. Male footballers have had to struggle through much tough times that current women footballers are, £20000 a year to play football is still more than most people get for doing their jobs and they dont have the outside chance of getting sponsorship deals, travel the world and do what they love. Women also play infront of tiny crowds for the most part, 10 or 11 people is a good turn out for many WPL matches so who exactly is going to be paying the wages the female players want? The mens clubs? When womens football has the national appeal nevermind global appeal of the mens game they can pipe up and ask for more money but just because a load of people at the olympics were stuck with womebns football tickets and 70000 saw us beat Brazil doesnt mean its going to change the game just yet. Most of those people just got tickets to say "I went to the olympic games in London". They didnt care what it was, they wuld of gone to watch horses ****ing jumping around if thats what ticket they ended up with. So do they have a point or are they wanting what they havent yet earned?
If the sport isn't generating the money for 20k a year then how can they be paid more? Would they like the tax payer to make it up!?
It's simply market forces. Millions of people pay millions of pounds for tickets and TV packages to see the most successful male football clubs. So the players who can given them that success are worth millions of pounds in wages to the clubs. Hence they are paid millions of pounds. The biggest women's football clubs get attendances in the hundreds, and low thousands for big games, which is about the same as League Two, with no TV money. So the players who can give them that success are worth thousands of pounds in wages to the club, and hence are paid thousands of pounds. Women footballers will be paid less than men as long as less people pay to watch them play. Quite ironic that Arsenal fans spend all their time moaning about their ridiculous ticket prices, mercenary players and lack of success when their women's team are the most successful in the land, with very low ticket prices and players who play for the love rather than the money. Also makes you wonder why all the female fans who complain about football being a 'lad's game' and all the bad language and bad role models don't just go and support their local women's team where the atmosphere is infinitely more civilised. In fact, yes that's it - we've cracked it. Once again, the fact that women are underpaid and under recognised when compared to men turns out to be entirely women's fault
They're wrong. When Donny Belles were the top side in wowens football along with Arsenal they played a game against the sunday league side I played for at the title. They were awful. The standard in womens football is poor and along with market forces ,as Swarbs highlights, means the pay in fair in my book. **** em anyway, they should be too busy making me a sandwich to moan about such things
Wasn't that about 20 years ago? I think the women's game has improved a lot since then, but probably only to around conference / FL2 standard. Which is about the standard they get paid at. Ain't that crazy? Women being paid a fair wage according to their level of skill and competence in a job?
Twenty years ago I was 10 Womens footy is **** . You only have to watch the FA cup final on TV to see it's gash
Donny Belles was the team mentioned in the report. Another thing to consider is that if they were any giood they would have offers from the US were the game is far more professional and wages reflect that increased level of quality.
