His contract expires at the end of this season, so ASAP in answer to your question.

Adkins has already hinted that such decisions are often left to the end of the season. By then, we will know which league we are in, which will have a massive effect on his contract or if he will choose to move on.

Adkins is aware of that...when asked about Puncheon's form against Chelsea, he said he has been great all season.

He's been fantastic, although it's still a little difficult to see a situation where he stays.

If Saints go down, Puncheon would want Premier League football and he has now proven he can play at that level. If Saints stay up, I think Cortese will free up the funds for a huge splash in that position. He would have to play well enough to convince the brass that they can finish top 10 with him as a starter.

Has he? Have to say that doesn't make much sense to me. They've all got clauses for pay cuts in the event of relegation anyway.

If we do go down and he wants to leave, we want to get something for him, not just let him go for nothing.

It may be Puncheon who is hedging his bets.

Maybe but that would contradict what he said last night:

"I'm hoping to be [here next season], I'm happy here, and that's the most important thing ... I can just say that I'm happy here and that's all I can say, and what will be dealt with will be dealt with internally."

If this is left till the summer he'll walk IMO, no matter where we finish. I wouldn't blame him either, time has been wasted with that three year deal, he messed about, he was messed about, & now he has shown what he can do.
Hope they make him a good offer this month, would really like him to stay, as would the lads.

If we don't make him an offer of a new contract, he is free to walk. If we offer a contract, we are entitled to compo. I'm sure Cortese has thought of that...unless letting him go was part of the deal they made.

If he's playing for a contract, he's certainly earned it

I've never thought it made sense to sign a player just so you can sell them, rather than letting them walk. Unless Puncheon really wants to do Saints a huge favor, it makes no sense for him to sign that contract as he will have more choices and almost certainly make more money as an FA signing.

So to get Puncheon (or whoever) to sign that contract, you have to lie to them and tell them they are in your plans. Then, once they've signed the contract, you're on the hook for the money due on the life of the contract. Now instead of selling them to make money, you're kind of selling them to get the wages off the books. The player will be mad and want to leave, you are wasting time selling an asset to recoup your contract wages, and other teams will know this and offer you reduced prices.

The one thing that can swing it is, if he is really happy in his home life here, then the relationship he has with his team mates. They are a close group, so hopefully they can make him see it would be worth while continuing his amazing journey with us.

Glad to hear if true. Didn't want him at the start of the season, but he's been remarkable. In particular, his finishing has improved immensely; even when he's not scoring ridiculous volleys, he's threatening the target against good opposition.

They don't have to sign the contract...you only have to offer a contract the same as or better than their present contract to qualify for compensation. Strange but true according to FA regs.

Pucheon has done it quietly and confidently on the pitch. Saints will offer him a contract as it makes sense to do
so if he accepts it or not is up to him to decide.

Well done to the lad, cracking goal last night
