It's Wilf-Red Zaha: Manchester United top rivals with £12m swoop for Palace star

    9 Jan 2013 22:31
Arsenal and Spurs look out of luck against deal that would pay Eagles an initial £8m and also see United loan them the winger AND other players

I'll be back! United's offer involves Zaha returning to Palace on loan until the summer
    Charlie Crowhurst
Sir Alex Ferguson has blown Arsenal and Spurs out of the race for Wilfried Zaha with a £12million package.

Manchester United boss Ferguson has pulled out all the stops to land the Crystal Palace and England youngster - and is even prepared to loan Zaha back to Palace.

We revealed last month that Fergie would go head-to-head with Arsene Wenger for the 20-year-old, and it appears that the Arsenal manager have been scared off by Palace’s demands.

Ferguson has wasted no time in making his move for Zaha during this month’s transfer window, as we revealed on December 29.

Tottenham have also been chasing Zaha, with chairman Daniel Levy championing their bid to get him, but they backed away this week after realising the player had always viewed it as a straight choice between United and Arsenal.

Premier League leaders United are believed to have offered £8m plus add-ons - a loan-back option for the rest of the season and the promise of further player loans to Palace to boost their bid for promotion from the Championship - which take the whole package up to around £12m.

It is understood Palace manager Ian Holloway, who has a close relationship with Ferguson, believes United’s deal to the best on offer, and it could be rubber-stamped in the next few days.

We can also reveal that Ferguson decided to move for Zaha after receiving a glowing recommendation from his son Darren, the Peterborough boss.

The 20-year-old was outstanding for Palace when they won at Peterborough in November, and it was his performance that day which persuaded Ferguson senior to take his son’s advice and go all out to get him.

Zaha’s arrival at Old Trafford would open the door for Portuguese winger Nani - who has interested both Arsenal and Chelsea - to leave, either this month or in the summer.

If this is true, then its great news, i've seen him a couple of times including against Huddersfield recently, this player is going to be a superstar, and an England international as well, every paper has got this story, there were alot of times interested in him.

tbh Huddersfield is not the benchmark to measure how good a player is
I like him, he is like walcott kind of, good pace (slower than Walcott though), but better dribbling .. but the end of products for both players leaves a lot to be desired tbh

I know, he was the main reasons Crystal Palace beat us in the league cup last season.

I'm still not sure about this move for Zaha to be honest, it's not that I don't think the guy has potential, but because he's more a striker/wide forward, and with the strikers we already have, do we really need another? And if he's being bought as a winger then I think there is better options out there, Will Buckley for example.

Newspapers and Twats on Twitter should stop signing players for us. SAF said no signings in January and so it will be.

I do not want to see Lumpard and A. Cole at our club.

we might sign Zaha but even if we do, he will come to us in summer, not now.

apart from that i don't think there will be any new player's coming to us this transfer window, Sir Alex confirmed it

Arsenal and Manchester United will hold talks with Crystal Palace his week as they battle it out for the €14.4 million signing of Wilfried Zaha, Goal.com can reveal.
United were the strong favourites to capture the highly coveted forward in January but Arsenal have dramatically re-entered the race.

The two Premier League big hitters are both due to meet Palace co-chairman Steve Parish later this week in what will be a straight fight for the 20-year-old’s signature.

Sources have told Goal.com that Zaha’s destination is “50-50” between United and Arsenal, with the final decision to rest with the player himself. He was a boyhood Gunners fan but that will not necessarily prove decisive.

Zaha appeared to end speculation about his future at the weekend, with a thinly-veiled hint on Twitter that he will be joining United. However, the Tweet – “Looks like i’m on my way to the top of the premier league” – is believed to have appeared on a fake account.

Parish and Palace manager Ian Holloway have both consistently said that Zaha will not be sold before the end of the season but it is understood that the newly-capped England international is set to leave Selhurst Park by the end of the window.

The fee required to secure the 20-year-old, who is contracted to Palace until 2017, is likely to be around the €14.4m mark.

Palace would prefer for Zaha to spearhead Palace’s promotion challenge and remain at the club until next summer but Arsene Wenger wants to integrate the youngster into the Arsenal set-up immediately.

Wenger would be opposed to a deal that would allow Zaha to join in the forthcoming window and then be loaned back to the Championship club for the rest of the season. United are believed to be open to the possibility of loan-back deal.

The attacker, who can play anywhere across the front three, has been a driving force in Palace’s surge to fourth in the Championship, scoring five goals in 26 league appearances this season. He made his England debut as a substitute in the 4-2 November friendly defeat to Sweden.

Wenger confirmed Arsenal’s interest in Zaha in loose terms at a media briefing in November, saying: “We are looking at every player who could strengthen our squad - but he is not more on the list than anyone else.”

This relatively innocuous comment was greeted with a furious reaction from Holloway, who accused Wenger of “bad etiquette” and declared he would be “picking the phone up to talk to him”.

I hope his birthday falls within a transfer window, so he can move to us on his 18th birthday.

Home grown player = 3 years at club on 21st birthday, so if his birthday is between transfer windows he won't be classified as home-grown one day...

FYI Rafael and Fabio are both home-grown <ok>

EDIT: Yes, I may have played Football Manager too much as a teenager... <whistle>

I don't think the birthday has to fall within a transfer window - Rafael and Fabio both agreed to join us in February 2007, they just had to wait until they were 18 to sign professional contracts. We can transfer his registration during a transfer window before he turns 18, and he then signs a professional contract on his 18th birthday thus meeting the criteria for being home grown.

    EDIT: Also:

    http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/home-grown-quota-for-premier-league.html
"A Home Grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)."

So if he turned 18 in February and we didn't sign him till July he would still have three seasons to go before the end of the season in which he turned 21 <ok>

Ah that's good news, thanks Swarbs <ok>

That end of season bit is the important part, I didn't know about that, I'm guessing it's a fairly recent addition to the rules (last few years) but I may be wrong...

But I know that for European youngsters it's not a problem, you can sign them up at a young age. But as far as I'm aware kids from South America can only leave the continent to join European teams once they turn 18, so that end of season rule is a key factor.
