I hope I didn't come. Across as negative as OM does. My gripe was with rolling thunder, as it seemed he was running hull and England down. I imagine it is pretty tough to start afresh, glad it's working for you and the other ex pats. I'm sure Melbourne only left to get away from Jo Brand anyways!!!
I don't mean to be negative, if your emigration down under is all that you wanted it to be that's fine, just pointing out some facts that it isn't a new England or a New South Wales in the sun but another country with good points and bad, which seems to be the consensus of this thread. The negativity I find on this subject is usually people's negativity to living in England and belief that the grass is greener elsewhere which i tend to get defensive about. Ive nothing to flee from, I'm English and I love living in England, I like the English seasons and climate and our winter football season, I like cold dark nights in Northern England that give us our indoor culture of cosy pubs, indoor music venues, theatre and quality literature and TV, I appreciate the summer months when they come round and holidays in Europe but wouldn't want that all year round, I'd be homesick like the Robert Browning poem Home thoughts from abroad!
I lived in NSW for 7.5 years as a kid. It's a brilliant place to grow up, but you do get a feeling of being cut off from the world. I was dying to get back here to watch the Tigers playing proper English football. Unfortunately we returned in 79 so I had to wait a few seasons for that wish to come true.
Best 10 quid I ever spent.I've lived in Sydney, Perth, have spent time touring Queensland around Cairns ,Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands, Magnetic Island .Spent time in Adelaide and toured the North West of Western Australia swimming with wild dolphins. Done a round the world trip through Europe to Brazil and back via New Zealand .My wife returns to England for 4-5 weeks every 18 months to 2 yrs .She spent 6 weeks in France travelling by barge up the Midi Canal .I came as a single guy with only $1000 to my name and no job.I settled easy ,found work plentiful.Changed jobs when I decided I needed a change .Getting a mortgage was easy the cost of living is very comparable with the UK I worked hard without being anything special .I own a home 2 cars ,have no debts and more money in the bank than we are likely to spend.Whilst living in Sydney may be comparable to London ,Perth in W.A. is much more pleasant and the outer suburbs a very safe place to live.I now live on the South West Coast with fabulous beaches ,great weather and a tranquil lifestyle ,something I would never have achieved had I stayed in Hull. My heart is still in Yorkshire and with the Tigers and a dying wish might be to be buried on Ilkley Moor where I spent a lot of my childhood. Yes it definitely was the best 10 quid I ever spent .
Probably wouldn't ever move abroad, the UK's too safe to move anywhere else...Healthcare etc It can't always be rosy in Australia, i'm sure it'll be hit by something big soon and go into chaos, plus the aussies are way too relaxed. I always used to want to move to America, until ofcourse i went and although its good for a holiday, thats about it. The actual food is disgusting from supermarkets, if you go off the tourist housing you see real americans living in shacks and that.......its really not that good. Plus all these horror stories about people going and ruining their lifes put me off
Not for me now , but as far as my kids are concerned , once they leave Uni i know there is nothing here for them , My oldest is doing nano tech , electronic engineering etc , so ive already accepted im not likely to see him much once he looks to start his career as theres nowt for him this end of the UK as things stand
Yeah i'm going to be studying Tourism Management at Uni so i really have the choice of getting a job anywhere in the world, but i will stay in England despite no jobs for young people at all but i'd like to think it will get better. The ONLY and ONLY reason i would ever move abroad is if i was literally just stuck with no job etc and couldn't find one but i could in Australia etc
No. Britain is best- we are steeped in football & popular culture tradition that the rest of the world envies. There's a bit more to life than barbies and a nice climate.
The issue with that is it's about perception rather than whether it is actually safer or not, and who is going to choose to move somewhere that they think is more dangerous?
I dont think £1000 would be enough to make it work, But I'd give it ago, In my opinion the UK is a country heading in the wrong direction, There are little or no deterents for crime, Benefit cheats, and laziness. The hard working people, and people who genuinley need the help are crapped on IMO. It's not the country thats wrong, It's some of the tits that live here, and the number of them is increasing. We've been ruined by generations of poor politicians and do gooders failing to get a grip on crime etc. I know when you see places on TV, Or you go on holiday you don't really get to see the 'average' home, But A colleague I used to work with (also an Electrician) recently moved to OZ and initially struggled but got by, and now both him and his girlfriend are doing really well out there. I Think it's a good move if you can take the risk.
I came in 1967. Thought I'd died and gone to "Boozers Heaven". My first Missus couldn't stand it (and she's the one who talked me into coming). Ten jobs available for every person. Bosses treated you like gold and took you to the pub every night and paid for your drinks. But, seeing as it wasn't broke - the Government decided to fix it and "The Land of Milk and Honey" quickly went down the gurgler. I came here as a Painter and Decorator but finished up on an Asphalt Road Crew and then in the Radio Room/Dispatch were I worked for over 20 years. First wife returned to Hull with our children but I stayed. Re-married to an Aussie girl and been with her for 33 years now. Been back to Hull many times for a holiday but I could never settle there again. The "Hull" I knew has well and truly gone. Now retired and live in "The Sticks" I have never regretted coming here. There are always jobs for tradesmen but the Australian's sacrifice everything for speed. Most Tradesmen would find that there are different definitions here and they would have to up their game somewhat. Multiculturalism hasn't worked here with many "communities" springing up (The Indian, Chinese, Italian and Muslim etc,.) which is seeing the old "G'Day mate, ars-yus-garn" Australian backslapping way of life disappearing. I've been here 45 years and am STILL a "Pommy B@rst@rd"! P.S. You get used to the "Huntsman Spiders" - they are non-poisonous anyway. please log in to view this image
Move to sunny california, we can go gold panning together in the hills. I promise not to murder you and steal your gold if we strike it rich.
I've been in Sydney many years and live a few minutes drive from some fantastic beaches. I loved growing up in 'Ull and still (proudly) sound like I'm from 'Ull - however I believe my kids will love growing up here even more - and by that I mean the outdoors lifestyle 12 months a year, the beaches, the mountains, the parks, the massive amount of sports-related access - they are accessible all year round. There are good people and bad people everywhere - however I do laugh when people talk about the deadly spiders and snakes - you rarely see one let alone go in head to head combat with them. Ironically the huntsman is the one people **** themselves as its massive but it's completely harmless
Not forgetting the odd "Blue Tongue Lizard" (also harmless) that keep your garden fresh from snails. Can become quite friendly if you take the trouble to feed them. This one is almost fully grown at about 18 inches long. Lives in a drainage pipe at the bottom of our retaining wall: please log in to view this image
Wow wierd looking lizard that one, it seems like its back legs are a long way from its front ones. You would think his belly would drag on the ground.
Yes Mrs.BMB, The Tiger Snake would have to be the most dangerous snake here in OZ as they are scared of no-one or anything and have been known to chase people if they feel threatened
I guess the sheep and the little englanders that have their blinkers on about 'this being the best country to live in' can inherit this **** hole of an island, where the PC police run rampant and everyone is so angry. Im ****ing off to Texas
****'s sake another one who can't see England's pleasant pastures beyond their pattyNchips culture, bring me my spear o clouds unfold.
I am currently travelling Australia/new Zealand/ Fiji etc! I am only 22yo but already I have no intentions of coming back! The lifestyle is of course expensive, but the wages help diminish that factor mainly. The way of life is what I enjoy. I ain't your TV/XBOX/pissed every weekend bla bla bla kinda 20+ year old. I enjoy the fact I can go to work, have a good social life with people who are so laid back and enjoy planning things I.e BBQ , go to concerts, sports events bla bla bla! Once work is over head to the beach and catch last hours of the sun, then either hit the gym, or go relax in a bar with friends and socialise and basically just live a little !! I have an apartment and I hardly stay in it' always on the go, meeting new folk and gettin myself out. I ain't jealous of my friends back home At all! They still watch TV series religiously or play Xbox and waste money on the piss in the same place the same people week in week out! I am in St Kilda in Melbourne. Google it, fantastic place to live. Won't find anywhere else like it. Been here 5 months now! UTT but ..... FU England your going on a long slippery slide downhill' n it won't stop !!! P.S - even a jellyfish sting that hospitalised me for few days when holidaying in the Gold Coast doesn't make me wanna leave' so the whole deadly animal thing! Pffffft! Pussies I say!!!!
