Just caught the news when I came home from work that billions are to be spent over the next few years modernising the rail network. Electrification all over the place but the Trans Pennine route from Liverpool to Hull modernnisation will stop at Selby. Some mouthpiece was saying Hull was important but other places were more important, Selby???
Selby is obvious, as it's the connection with the East Coast Main Line. Hull is thus still out on a limb. Hull's MPs should start a ****ing big stink!
What does Selby connect to the East Coast mainline though? It runs through from Darlington to York and then Donny. Selby is a spur off the main line as well, it's just a shorter one than Hull is on.
Never realised that, Ric! I honestly thought the ECML ran through Selby. I'm fairly sure it used to? But - in the light of your post - indeed, why Selby?
To be completely fair, I can see the logic in this. The network to HUll from Selby is not particularly well used when compared to other areas of the network and they probably should spend the money where most will benefit. On the flipside of course the argument might be invest in rail in this area and more people will use it.
We should just break off, use those Allam Marine generators to drift through the North Sea and join Scandanavia. At least we could call on a strong national football team.
Me and my son always laugh about it, flying to heathrow from the states at what 500 miles an hour, the train from London to Donny 100 or so. Then the train from Donny to Hull stopping at Broomfleet and Brough etc about 40 miles an hour, then a bus to the KC maybe 15 MPH if you are lucky. He said first time over " Dad, seems like the closer we get to Hull the slower we go" ha ha ha I never thought about it before but he was right
When I was based in Hull and travelling, I always drove to Donny and took the train to London from there to London and visa versa. I think quite a few people do this, but if there was a better service from Hull then probably people would use it.
Disastrous news. The Trans Pennine route is similarly funded in such a way as to exclude us. We are in real danger of being isolated by rail and road- by being isolated I mean linked but in a visibly and commercially second class way that says to non locals "No one really goes there, no on really needs to go there and your business doesn't need to locate there." We don't have a motorway and we won't have electrified rail services. What does that tell outsiders about the profile and importance of our city?
