Let me make my point by saying that I am new to the sport itself (2010 World Cup). With the EPL being on TV here every weekend, I chose my team to support. Wanting to expand my footie knowledge, I next wanted to learn about the Championship (which is only natural, right). So at the beginning of the season, I did some quick reading and latched on to Hull City. I immediately tried to learn as much as possible about the team. That does not make me a 'plastic fan' only a late bloomer . So now that 'we' (City) are in position for promotion, I will have no Championship side to support/follow. I think that might make me the opposite of 'plastic fan', would it not? I CHOSE City because they were NOT in the EPL.
Works for me Leo. I don't care how or why people support the club, so long as they do. It brings in interest and of course the stuff that makes the world go round. Sure - there were folks who jumped on board when City hit the premier league but there were also plenty in the Hull area who jumped on board when they started winning in the old fourth tier (3rd division)...even more in subsequent promotions. Each club strives to be a global brand so i would never label any overseas supporter plastic.
I'm not referring to long-term US and Canadian supporters like John, me, yourself, and others. I'm talking about those who emerged when we got promoted and signed Altidore. They've all gone now. So I'll stand by my "generalisation" thankyou very much.
Thanks, Jammos. Great point about supporters from overseas. I would just like them to come to the States (Or North America). I'd fly anywhere in the US to go see them. I think it'd be great exposure if promoted. I mean, what could it hurt? I'm actually from Bergen County by the way.
Anywhere in the US is cheep enough to get to. When you add at least $800 just to get to England it starts to add up to a lot of money.
True. Like I said in one of my first posts. I had planned on going to England in February for a 3 game - 4 or 5 night stay and do nothing but see football but had to cancel. The guy I planned this with was selected as a best man for his friend's wedding and had to drop a bunch of cash for that so he couldn't swing it this year. We are now aiming for Next November or next February.
I wish there was a boat one could take as the cruise lines are just as expensive as an airplane. I got more time on my hands than money.
You wont get three City games in an 4 or 5 night stay. Minimum to watch 3 City games is 8 days. I usually do two separate 8 day trips per season timed to coincide with three games each time. If you want to fill up the remaining days with Premier, D1, D2 and Conference games, you could pretty much get close to watching a game every day. Personally, I won't watch a live game if City are not playing, imho it runs pretty close to watching paint dry! If you are going to go do it, then do it in style, get yourself a first class Britrail pass for 8 days, don't mess with the driving. If you go November through Feb, you will get 20 % discount on your Britrail Pass. Just got back from the most recent trip, witnessing a draw against Leicester, win against Leeds and draw against Blackpool. Well worth the effort and the cost just for the Leeds game alone. I would have seen the FA cup match too but got sick as a dog after standing in the cold and wind at Blackpool.
Actually, I was talking about any football games that I could get to. My goal was to see Everton, Hull City, Old Trafford and The Emirates. It would be my first time to England so I'd like to see a little bit of London. Sounds like one heck of a nice trip. Too bad about getting sick. Thanks for the info.
