    Cheers Spurf <ok>

I have a love/ hate relationship with silly season and I just always get sucked in by it. I'm pretty sad when it comes to the windows, in the past 18 months/ 2 years, I think I've booked off the last day of each window just to sit at home and watch SSN from morning 'til the window closes <laugh>

    cheers mate.

I'd just like to reiterate that I'm no different to any one else on this board, and the things I post are from what I believe to be "more reliable" sources, simply to pass on the information to everyone else. I've just spend time honing in on "credible" people and filtering out all the ****. It's very easy to get sucked in like SOS says (especially as a spurs fan), but a lot is making sense in this window.

Interesting, I thought the reason it dragged out for so long was because Levy wanted cash only, no part player nonsense like Madrid kept trying to do (Sahin), and ended up with £26/7m up front with 6 to come as add-ons.

I dont think he would lower himself like that even if he is really a bit ****. He spent two seasons trying to free himslef from you spuds when you were holding him hostage so I cant see him going back unless he has that stockholm syndrome thing.

I could list every factual inaccuracy in Rubadub's post, but that would take so long it wouldn't be worth the effort.

As I said earlier I still have no idea on how much Madrid paid upfront etc but I reckon we'd have got a bit more than £10m. The amount we shelled out on transfers after he left would've surely meant we'd have needed a decent chunk of the Luka money, £15m for Moussa, £8m for Hugo, £6m for Deuce and then we signed Verts £8m and Sig £8m (all rough fees) before his departure so I do think Levy would've wanted a decent bit upfront. Purely guessing though there.

Like I said SoS, I'm fairly sure Levy held out for all cash, hence the delay, he didn't want any of their bits n pieces offers, and got 27m of the 33/5m up front, he wanted 40m in the beginning don't forget.

Most large transfers are broken up into installments, even when there are no add-ons included, I believe.
Madrid may have only paid £10m so far, but they'd still have to pay the rest if they moved Modric on.
It might even trigger the add-ons, especially with such a quick move.

You're quite right PNP, they are in general, but there's always exceptions.

The more I look, all I can find is an up front instalment of 27 mill...

"Rennes' holding midfielder Yann M'Vila is another midfield target, while Spurs are closing on a £13 million deal for Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as Levy spends the final frantic days before Friday's deadline trying to spend the £27 million cash up front that he will receive for Modric."

Yeah I can fully believe that, Levy likes getting in money ASAP in order to invest in into the club, be it on players or facilities.

A good example of this is the Anelka transfer - they were trying to send him back to Highbury within a few months of them signing him, and making out they wouldn't have to pay 2/3 of the agreed fee.

It;s not like Football Manager where the entire amount is deducted from your transfer kitty the second the papers are signed.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Modric back in the Premier League and he obviously has no loyalty to us. He was crazy thinking he would get in to the first team on a regular basis at Madrid. Modric was a quality player but he doesn't score enough goals. Madrid's midfield does.

He was good for us, but that was all tainted by the way he forced his move

    Nani swap for Modric?

I don't want to see Nani go, but I'd sooner have Modric.

    Nani + Anderson?

Modric in the PL looks a distinct possibility again.

Alongside Frank Lampard in Utd's midfield <laugh>

Don't you just love the silly season?

Yeah - anything I've ever read with any depth on how football transfers are financed has said that all, or at least most, transfer fees are paid in installments. So I take it to be that the 27m is upfront in that it is before appearances, trophies etc have been accumulated by the player, rather than up-front in how it's paid.

And when Spurs "spend" the cash it is a mixture of money and IOUs that will come in over a period of years. I'd imagine that for accounting purposes it can count as assets and hence the footballing finance things that we see show the transfer fees as income for the selling season alone. And Spurs then set up a similar deal, assured in the knowledge that the money's coming in over time, to set up a payment plan to buy their next signing.

This is how come we had all those funny deals with Portsmouth a couple of years back. They were still paying the installments for the likes of Kaboul, Defoe etc (?) and we could therefore negotiate and end to those payments as part of the transfer fee back to us.

Also wasn't the Bale deal changed mid-way through the payment plan and a good year or two after he'd signed so we could help (take advantage of) cash-strapped Soton and give them a lump sum to clear the debt at a reduced price? Or did we just buy out the need to pay up if his performance-related clauses were activated?

Here's a quick mention of the Mendes and Kaboul transfers playing a part in the Defoe negotiations:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...main-Defoe-before-Carling-Cup-semi-final.html

And bear in mind that when Defoe came back it was three years after Portsmouth signed Mendes from us.

  18. We've proven that we do not need Modric. In fact, I think we have a better balance to the team without him.

Let him go to CFC - the fans don't want him there, anyway, now - or to United. I doubt he'll be as effective for any other team as he was for us. It's very often the way.

Because of what's happened to him at Madrid I feel he's going to be another Robbie Keane,Darren Bent and Andy Carroll, all lost souls wandering in the desert not knowing where to go and feeling fairly useless. He felt that Chelsea would be a dream fairy tale castle for him but I'm not so sure. Frankly he doesn't worry me wherever he goes in the PL as don't Bent and Carroll.

He had a good game tonight, I hear. Not as good as Ronaldo responding to missing out on another Balloon door by scoring a hattrick, mind.
