    -------------------------------
FRANCE Under 21 midfielder Alfred N’Diaye is poised to become Sunderland’s first signing of the January transfer window.

But the transfer of the 6ft 2in defensive midfielder from Turkish side Bursaspor is not as imminent as has been suggested and the Black Cats will not be unveiling him today.

N’Diaye is set for talks after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.

An initial bid of £2million for the muscular midfielder, who can also play in central defence, was originally rebuffed by Bursaspor.

But an improved bid, believed to be in the region of £3million, has opened the door for the move.

N’Diaye will fly to the North East for talks leading to a potential medical but the club is keen to point out that that does not mean a signing is all but wrapped up.

Their cautious approach is understandable with much that can still go wrong in transfer negotiations.

But Sunderland are hopeful that he could become the first signing of the transfer window.

If the deal is wrapped up quickly, he could potentially be available for the game against West Ham United this weekend but the likelihood is that it would not be done in time for the weekend.

A new signing before the visit of the Hammers would certainly give Sunderland a boost not just in terms of a fresh face but in much-needed reinforcements.

For example, Martin O’Neill currently has only two fit central defenders available and they are his fourth and fifth choice players – Matt Kilgallon and Titus Bramble.

And while N’Diaye’s is primarily a defensive midfielder, he can also play in central defence when required.

Long-term though N’Diaye would add height and power to a Sunderland side which is currently lacking in it. He would also add extra physicality and presence in a midfield which, again, is challenged by so many Premier League clubs with physically imposing central midfielders.

His signing would certainly lift fans who have seen the club’s depleted squad running on empty at times over the course of five games in 15 days which ended on Saturday with the 2-2 draw against Bolton.

But Martin O’Neill is determined to bring in a number of players in the window to ensure that Sunderland have a genuinely competitive squad for the remainder of the campaign.

And if N’Diaye’s transfer, as expected, is confirmed soon, he is likely to be only the first of a string of signings Sunderland will make this month.

Talks are still ongoing about the proposed short-term loan of Tim Cahill from New York Red Bulls.

But the club has made no approach so far for Hungarian international Roland Juhasz, despite the Anderlecht centre-half expressing an interest in joining Sunderland.

Demba Ba discussed terms one day and within 2 days he was a Chelsea player.
This lad - we've agreed terms and he needs personal terms but, accordign to this, it will take a week to finalise the deal???? WHY!!!

Do we need to get someone in place who can make this happen quickly? Do we need to stop fannying on??
WHY does it always take weeks for us to tie up a deal yet it takes days for others - It's Monday and we have 4 working days before our next game - needs to be signed before lunch on Friday to play on Saturday I think??

Totally agree, linked one day and then 3 weeks later they sign. Why cant the process they have be more in line with other clubs, we need players in early Jan not late Jan, targets will of been ear marked in December so why we have all these delays is beyond me also

It's the Sunderland way mate we get ****ed about by every team over transfers yet we bend over backwards for them. Think our whole set up is a bit stone age at the minute and along with our scouting network needs some serious revamping or we will keep bumbling along with crocks and stop gaps instead of bringing in the good players we need.
We do get one or two decent players now and again but, more by luck than good judgement.
Look at the Bent and Gyan deals both wanting away both talked to clubs who wanted them both gone within a couple of days, we go for Fletcher and get held to ransom by Wolves for about a month before finally settling on a fee.

He wont sign before friday. The Sunderland way. This could go the distance. Whether its because players agents stall things while holding out for a better move, to a london club for example. Frustrating as hell.

I think 'agents' is the key word over this..If care is not taken we could end up with a deal like the Mags ended up with Ba..

Hiya lads, been a while since i've posted but i've been checking the posts daily and am really excited about this one. Since I work in this industry (albeit primarily in the fareast) I think I may be able to explain why this is taking so long.
Any transfer that is done never only takes a few days or so, thus making 'deadline day transfers' a hoax. When you add in the fact that this is an international transfer where people of many nations are involved it adds an extra day or two. In aforementioned BA's case there was a very unique release clause in the contract therefore when the clause was triggered there is no room for negotiations (a huge porton of the transfer being complete). you then add in that the agent probably made the terms very clear to chelsea and those negotiations were brief as chelsea can easily match demands and the players overwhelming desire to join them will have also probably made it cross the line faster. You then add in a medical check (again if it's an international transfer it takes a while for the player to actually get to the destination) and the release documents having to be signed and sent from both sets of Football Associations, you can see why a foreign transfer tends to take over a week to actually finalise.

i'm not defending our transfer policy but in this particular case i think there isn't much more that can be done to make things faster, and im sure oneil is the one who's most anxious to get a player of this type into the club!!

    Just SAFC being cautious imo.

However, the difference between Chelsea signing Ba, and us signing N’Diaye is a pretty bloody obvious if you ask me.

Any club could come in and scupper the deal between us and N’Diaye. Much harder for a team to hijack the Ba/Chelsea deal (unless it was Man City).
Agents will be waiting to see if any bigger offer come in for N’Diaye (so they get more) so they delay, whereas with Ba they will already be taking a significant amount.
Paperwork. Player coming over from another country will always take more time than a transfer between premier league clubs.

As for Fletcher, Wolves were holding out for more money. There wasn't a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for a set fee - we had to negotiate.

Bent was tapped up and it was 24 million quid, we were hardly going to hang around with Villa offering that much for him. The Gyan story is still not clear imo.

he's a little bit out of my region but a mate of mine (french) said that he has the potential to be something very special. good attitude, rock solid, versatile and more than anything eager. had a bum agent who took him out to turkey in the first place but is no longer with him and wants to get everything back on track in footballing terms.

Exactly mate. We ain't Man Utd or Chelsea and we are fighting to get better players against a backdrop of potentially better and bigger clubs paying bigger wages and offering European football.

Even if we do sign this lad, we will battle to hang to him if he turns out to be a top player throughout his time here. That's the way it is lads.

rather it took us ages to find the right player and pay the best price we could for him than go back to the "£8m for anton ferdinand" days.
