I just picked up a copy of "Uncut" magazine (for the article on Gram Parsons + cover disc) and discovered a fairish article on Mick Ronson inside: http://www.uncut.co.uk/morrissey/mo...arists-had-a-grain-of-mick-ronson-s-natural-s
My claim to fame is I went out with his sister Maggie for a time back in the day, never met the great man tho. She chatted me up in Bierkeller, not a match made in heaven alas. I was young and an idiot she was a mormon...
Anyway - ta muchly. I await any further info.... (Must have had a 'senior moment'! - I know I intended to).
I love Mick Ronson, one of my inspirations to learn the guitar. Not sure I could carry his glamrock look off though
I think my picture gives it away Casual but I still think Ronno, Woody and Trev were the best line up Bowie ever had!
First time I say him was up stairs in the concert room on a Sunday evening at the Duke of Cumberland in Ferriby, from memory his band then was the Rats. What a talent.
I envy you John, I was born in 1960 so obviously missed those gigs. Ironically, I've gigged regularly with ex-Rat John Cambridge, and currently doing some gigs with later ex-Rat Ched, and currently or usually gig with many if not most of Ronno's contemporaries. I saw him play live post Bowie (with Ian Hunter). Superb musician, sublime guitarist and based on only a couple of brief meetings but on the word of Trevor Bolder and Cambo a lovely chap too! EDIT: I wish I could put the clock back and see him play in those early days...
Did anyone see the re-formed Benny and the Rats at an East Park free concert - must have been summer of '92 or '93? - and Ched spoke about how he had first seen the Rats at a free concert in East Park, with Ronno on guitar. And, as he said it, he was now re-enacting the role he had played, replacing Ronno after he left. Don't remember which year it was, precisely, but it was after he died (1992) and was a tribute to the great guitarist.
I did Stan and enjoyed it thoroughly. Jeez ... Benny's a character. As a big fan of Bowie & Spiders plus Mott The Hoople I had the privilege to MC the second half of the Sunday concert in QG in 97. This was to open the Mick Ronson stage as you might recall. If someone had told me in 1973 aged 13 that one day I'd be singing backing vocals with Maggie Ronson and Joe Elliott with Ian Hunter and the Spiders from Mars playing All The Young Dudes I'd have said they were feckin' mad. A dream come true! (well that and City making Wembley/Premier league of course!) A good day tinged with sadness!
Don't tell anyone, I think it's supposed to be a secret, but there's going to be a Spiders From Mars reunion this year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust. Provisionally arranged for May 1st at the Hammersmith Apolo and if it sells out, the day before has been set aside for a second date. Trev and Woody will be joined by lots of guest performers, all of whom were inspired by the Ziggy album(there's a right mixed bag, from rock guitarists to Boy George and Martin Kemp). I'll post full details nearer the time if anyone's interested?
I am OLM! The anniversary (of the album) was last year so this'll be of the end of the 'Ziggy year' perhaps?
It is indeed a celebration of 40 years since Bowie announced the end of Ziggy, which was also in Hammersmith.
My greatest thrill was my best friend at school started as a hairdresser on Anlaby Common, and Trevor Bolder also from memory in his early days started as an apprentice there. I was waiting for my pal to finish work one evening and Bowie pulled up outside the shop and picked up Trevor and Mick was inside the car with Bowie. It wasn't until later that we realised what a thrill that was. I guess that must have been around 1964.
A slight aside: Didn't Trev Bolder have a brother? I forget his name but, as he had red hair, was known as 'Ginger' Bolder. From recollection, he drove a biggish red van (a Transit?) to Nottingham, daily, something to do with wholesale chemists.
That's Ian, who is actually the older brother. Trevor is the middle brother and Andy is the younger brother and a friend of mine!
