NEIL Warnock is convinced two of his journeymen are ready to make an impact in the top flight – even though the Rs boss is ready to add five new players to his roster.

He said: “I think Loftus Road’s small pitch will suit Shaun Derry and Clint Hill.

“They will more than play their part on a surface they can cover easily, and I think they’re ready to surprise quite a few."

Thirty-three year-old Derry admitted it was a dream come true to make the top flight after 16 years of trying.

He said: “I wish it would have come earlier, but now that it’s here throughout the close season I intend to stay as fit as possible, and prepare even more so for the Premier League.

“When the fixtures appear in July – that’s when it will sink in I’ve finally made it.”

Much as I love Derry and Hill, if it's first team NW's talking about, that's got to be morning-after sentiment talking. Hate to say it but that really worries me (see the speed of movement in the Fulham v Liverpool match last night?).

Too bloody right those 2 get a shot next year, whether as first choices or squad players. Whilst I can understand concerns that both will struggle against PL strike forces, quite often the best defenders in the league struggle against them too.

My point is unless we go spend mega money on huge names our team won't have it easy, but positional sense
and work ethic combined with the professional attitude will go a long way

Prefer One team over 11 individuals

Yes we will undoubtably need to improve quality in all areas however I don't see kicking out the strong aspects of the team as the right way to go and these two definately have a part to play next season

ranger_zone: heart agrees but head doesn't. Like the way you put your case though.

Cheers Brixton. If we can pick up the right players and they replace either or both in the starting line up then fine, sentimentality can't stand in the way of progress but these two should remain at the club.

There are more important bits of dead wood not good enough this year that should be moved on first.

Spot on there. But I think they deserve a crack at it and if / when they start to f**k up, drop them to bench and release them at the end of the season. I can't see them as Prem players but like I said, they deserve a chance after all they've done. We can't sign 22 new players after all.

I think that these two can still be part of our squad next year , I agree though there are lots of other deadwood that needs to go.

I must admit that the names we have been linked with are not of the right quality. I see in the press last night that we are linked with Bowyer and Liam Rosenior. This is not better than we already have and would not improve our team. I would be more comfortable if we were setting heights a little higher. I suppose we will have these rumours all summer!

These 2 will have major parts next season I can only see a few from the starting 11 this season not being there next season people like helguson and fitz and ****tu will be replaced the rest will have a massive input we are not going to spend massive next season like we all wish.

Derry as player of the year deserves his chance as much if not more than any other player and Hill whislt i think his speed is downfall does read the game well and is a good tacker. certainly be interesting to see hill come in with an 'old-fashioned' challenge on someone like nani next year

I think that it is right to give these players a chance and not get rid, as it is not only on match day when they can make an impact. Adel was captain his year and wore the arm band, but how much "captaining" (not sure if that word is in the dictionary) did those two do organising the defence.

Ninj is right. Think about the experience these two have, they could easily help our youngsters in their game and mentor them and we may see more players make the step up from our youth team. Just think about if the club brought back say furlong to help the youth team strikers, we could end up with a new big strong forward who'd have their whole career ahead of them

I think we mostly agree, we are not going to buy an entire new team, or even an entire new defence, yes we are lacking pace, yes we will struggle against pace attackes but pretty much so does everyone else... Am happy to add one of two to the defence squad and for both these guys to have their chance to play in the premier league, I can't see Derry's fitness lasting all season and Hill is going to look slow at times but i seem to remember saying the same thing this season and it hasn't worked out so badly has it. A bit of guile experiance and toughness are not bad qualities to have especially in the premier league, and sometimes i think we worry to much about speed and our apparent lack of it, if we set up right we can counter it, if there's no space to run into we can make it work.
