I think that it was his general arrogance which upset a lot of people and the fact that no-one started to believe what he said.

"I am happy to be living in the North East and that my kids are going to a local school" translated to him flying home after every training session to Cheshire. When he was doing that it was clear that he was saying one thing and doing another.

Another example would be his stated devotion to the club and, yet, refusing to sign a contract thus causing plenty of "Will he, won't he?" questions being raised.

Little wonder why then a lot of other chairmen would have looked at him and thought that he wasn't worth the risk. That, for me, was his downfall; he basically caused himself to be unemployable and then in a moment of incredible foolishness he produced that brochure.

And on the pitch he didn't do himself any favours. Yes, he could slot in the goals when he was served the ball but do remember how he acted when he was the captain. When times were hard, i.e. the relegation season, rather than be rallying the troops (see this year for another example of a captain's failings) he'd be at the other end of the pitch mooching around and trying to hide.

I got the impression that he'd play his socks off for any team, as long as they were Liverpool. Since they had no need for him he was more or less left out in the cold.

So, as I say, for me his downfall was his attitude.

I was born in South Shields been living in Cottingham since 1997, Ipswich before that.

I used to work for East Riding of Yorkshire Council so I am familiar with Bridlington.
