Once upon a time Owen was the golden boy of English Football, lauded by pundits and fans alike.
Now... he plods along at Stoke, playing when picked or indeed when not injured.
I struggle to remember a star falling so far and fast off his pedestal in the modern game.
It got me thinking as to where it all went wrong for the lad?
Some say it was when he left Liverpool, some say it was when he got hooked on horse racing... others cite his choice of club in joining the Toon on his return from Spain.
Other pundits point to his early start in the game hampering his injury record in later years.
So... where and when do you think things started to go sour?

When God gave him faulty ligaments... and tendons... and muscles... and foot bones...

    Anything I missed?

I think some of it must be related to his early start in the game as his developing muscles will have been put under an adult training regime.

A lot of people have criticised him coming to Newcastle, citing that he came for the money, I'm certainly glad those days are over, I don't believe Spain was a good move for him personally, but a poster on not606 has the username moreinjuredthanowen, one of my favourites, a very fair summary. <laugh>

It's galling to think he is our record signing and most likely will be for some time to come.

Was Owen with you the season that you went down?
Unless my memory is deceiving me, which it could well be, didn't Own score a fair number of golas in what could have been described as a struggling team?
Did his injusries start in Spain or did they start when he was with you?

Owen when he first came I thought was different class. It's when he broke his foot and more importantly when he basically screwed his whole knee up playing for England. Players are never the same after those sort of injuries

Cruciate ligament injury <ok> it is very common, as I have experienced, for someone who has torn their cruciate to have chronic hamstring problems as the new tendon is grafted (basically made from a cut out) of the hamstring tendon, as it is the most suitable, and bolted in place. The paradox is the bolted in cruciate is usually stronger than the original cruciate but the hamstring is weakened

He wasn't Crocker when he went to Newcastle, and his goalscoring record at Madrid was ok, he just didn't get that many starts. It was his pursuit of his international career that did him in.

One thing that pisses me off is that I had never heard the argument " he was overplayed as a junior" until Alex Ferguson said it, now the press use it left right and centre.

    When he left Liverpool <ok>

He saw the pot of gold, left, whilst we won the Champions League then FA Cup.

Then wanted to come back to Prem, we rejected him, he went to you and did nothing.

And its been like that since. Such a shame (not).

I think it was when he produced that 'brochure' about himself!

    <laugh>

There was no coming back from that farce!

Its sad. When he talks about Stoke, then quickly reminds people thats 'his' team. Has he started a game for them yet? I reckon that Pulis is actually quite angry he signed him.

I blame it all on the tash he grew (making him look like a porn star) for Movember (a very good cause granted)

That and the fact that he is a money grabbing, injury ridden, benching warming twat.
