I'm off this week and just slobbing out in front of the TV (got that frigging bug anarl which is just my luck) and have just watched one of the the greatest Westerns of all time, if not the greatest, in Shane. Its 60 years old now and I must have seen it over 100 times and its still fantastic from beginning to brilliant end. Always creates a debate as to whether he dies in the end or not. Brilliant stuff. Alan Ladds finest movie and Jack Palance is simply the greatest cowboy baddie of all time. So menacing and full of pure malevolence. Van Heflin, Jean Arthur, Brandon de Wilde (the kid Joey), Ben Johnson and Elisha Cook Jr make up a superb cast Anyone else a fan of this movie or have you some better Westerns in mind. "Prove it" (only Shane fans will get this)
Correct me if I'm wrong but is that the one with the Bowie Knife? If so after he loses it some woman says to him "I see you still wear the sheath". Classic line. If I am wrong, bugger.
great movie, as you said jack palance is superb imo he does die at the end as he slumps over the horse but happy to be proven wrong, as for the greatest western too many to mention my favourite the searchers other great westerns unforgiven, true grit, outlaw josey wales and the shootist whitch is agreat film but doesnt always get a mention.
Never watched Shane reckon I will have to rectify that ...always been a fan of Spaghetti Westerns especially Sergio Leone movies with the Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Loads of peeps of ill atm been fluey myself over the last few days
I've been watching Von Ryan's Express...And I too have been down with the flu bug all bloody week...I think I'm over the worst of it now though, so might even venture to the gym tonight to try and sweat it out and blow the cobwebs off.
The Shootist was JW's last film and quite prophetic as the character he plays is dying of cancer, which of course claimed the Duke a couple of years later? It is a class film as well. Good shout matey. I too like JW films and Clints (obviously) but Shane is just such a classic about good v bad and the will of men to want to do good. It could never be remade, although Pale Rider is a very close copy of the story.
I always thought 'Once upon a time in the west' was a great Western. It was a flop when it came out (probably because it is a long movie), but has to be up there with the best of them.
Agree about Once Upon a Time in the West - great film, great music. Leonne was the master of the long dramatic close-up and both Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda provided plenty in this film. "What are we gonna do with this one Frank? "Well, now that you've called me by name"........bang.
Josey Wales was a great movie as was Soldier Blue. Loved the Dollar movies. Eli Wallach was a great western baddie. High plains drifter. John Wayne is big leggy, anyone remember The Cowboys, where he takes a group of school kids to fight the battle?
