Joey Barton was reportedly a victim of a burglary over the festive period.

The QPR footballer - currently on loan at Marseille - is said to have been targeted by thieves who monitored his whereabouts via Twitter.

The home in question in West Darby, Liverpool, belongs to Barton's girlfriend Georgia's mother Denise McNeil.

Barton was hosting a zoo-themed party for son Cassius nearby, and it is thought the thieves chose to hit the house as they knew he would be out at the time, reports The Sun.

The burglars broke windows to break into the house, and also smashed his son's Christmas toys before making away with a family safe.

A source said: "Joey had been staying over Christmas and it's likely the thieves knew he was there.

"He was tweeting pictures from the party while the robbery was in progress. They couldn't believe the state of the place when they got home."

Joey Barton made no comment about the burglary as he made his way back to France yesterday (January 2).

He recently threatened to sue the Daily Mail over an article stating that he should come out as gay.

Several Liverpool players have had the same trick played on them in the past. Too much information given out over the media, Joey. Suggest from now on, you broadcast it's cocoa and slippers each evening

Wouldn't it be easier and more rewarding for the burglers to just break into Barton's house whilst he's in France? As opposed to his girlfriend's mum's house when they've nipped out for the night over Xmas.
