How often do you hear a statement like that from a beleagured manager - In this case Harry Redknapp.Do they really understand the reality behind the stats? Or is it just whistling in the dark? On the surface of it it seems straightforward enough. There you are stuck on ten points and you win three,in this case away to Chelsea (one home defeat in nine)Home to Spurs (Two points behind Chelsea and in a Champions League place),and away to West Ham (currently on a poor run but quite possibly on the fringes of a relegation fight by then) That puts you on 19 points and everything is tickety-boo. But of course life isn't as simple as that. While 'arry is grabbing those nine easy points Villa have a home game against Southampton,so either a point a piece or three for one of them. And so it goes on relegation rivals have games against top teams one week followed by a match against fellow strugglers or,as the season goes on,against sides with nothing to play for. The dynamics of the table are quite simple. Most years the 18th club is capable of reaching the mid 30's.They have bad runs and they have less bad runs.So all QPR have to do is reach 38points,so another 28 from 18games.That's top six form from a club that currently makes the Coalition look like a model of good management.Good luck with that one 'arry!
to stay up, qpr need to win about 9 of their last 18 games, complemented with a handful of draws. it just isn't going to happen. they might win 6 or 7. 7 wins would take them to 31 points so they'd need at least 6 or 7 draws minimum to have any chance, so that means only losing 5 games between now and may. what i find funny is that when harry took over he stated, on tv, that if qpr were still cut adrift come january 1st, he would ask the owner NOT to spend money on the team. i guess he felt they'd have at least another 6-8 points by this stage than they've got, but all i'm hearing now is how they 'need major investment and reinforcements'. and who are the players being targeted? that's right - more of the same. joe cole, anelka, bent you've got to laugh at harry really - they are absolutely doomed, no question, and redknapp is not the kind of guy you want in charge under these circumstances. they'll be bankrupt by this time next year and i wouldn't wish that on any club.
I really can't see how they can escape the drop this time, no matter who they do or donât sign - also rumour mill is that Taarabt wants to leave. Theyâre only slightly saving grace is that their goal difference is marginally better than Villaâs. I watched the 2nd half against Liverpool yesterday and they looked a very poor and dispirited side. I really reckon âArry Houdiniâ has taken on a âpoisoned chaliceâ on this one. Time and games are starting to run out for him now!!!
I think from the first whistle to the last the expression on many of those players were so depressive and so down, it was this time of year where they needed to kick on but so many games have passed by and they haven't. I think the writing is on the wall for them now!
their best player was mackie. and who do you think will be the one who gets replaced by the likes of anelka...? they are THE example of how NOT to run a football club. i'm not one for saying 'i told you so' but i was hardly alone in expressing dismay at the stance qpr's board have taken since promotion with us. it is one thing to be ambitious but quite another to have delusions of grandeur. they always fell into the latter category. it could only ever lead to one thing and that was bankruptcy in the long run. as it happens, it might happen sooner rather than later if they aren't careful and get their house in order.
FACT ( hell! I sound like Mikey) - QPR are the 15th top flight side to have accumulated 10 pts or less ( with 3 pts for a win) after 20 games - the previous 14 all went down.
Interesting fact Royal Barclay, but sides like Swindon and Derby when it happened to them didn't have the calibre of manager or resources of Rangers. It was insightful watching MOTD last night and seeing players giving up all over the pitch. That is something 'Arry can put right. I don't think anyone is talking about them beating Chelsea or Spurs but it's not three wins over three games they need, it's over the course of the season. I think the axe will be wielded in January and it will be a different QPR side after that. I think they'll improve but i don't quite think they'll have enough though, it is a big ask even for 'Arry.
good point about MotD being insightful last night. that'll be because pat nevin was on it! please bbc, give him more time instead of lawrenson and shearer he's bright, clever and clear in all he says. excellent pundit
He does a programme called 'kicking off' on 5live with Colin Murray and Perry Groves on a Friday evening. Both he and Groves have a better grasp of the game than Shearer, Hansen and Lawrenson combined.
I think QPR will struggle to reach 30 points even if they do improve. By the same token Reading might reach as much as 33 points with improvement over the next 18 games - also not enough, IMO. They would also need to win all their 6-pointers at the bottom, including against each other, and that's the problem. Southampton, Villa and Wigan could reach as much as 36-38 points in theory, but again you need to take into account playing each other, which will make it very difficult for all three to do so. Thus 38 points could be enough for City to survive and even 40 points only requires 3 wins and 6 draws or 4 wins and 3 draws. Very achievable targets, IMO and I think we will do much better than that.
yes, he does a lot of radio work and also features on sportscene in scotland. i just wish we had him on the motd sofa on a saturday night! the bbc seem obsessed with a different type of personality though. when i watch motd, i want to watch the action and then hear some analysis of why the match panned out how it did, rather than some moronic dig or some excuse for a joke that we have to put up with now. last night we got what i wanted.
A good topic guys, nice threads without any vitriol. As has been said on the QPR board, Harry's comments sound delusional but he can't exactly say he is throwing the towel in, can he? I am dreading this transfer window if the names of Cole and Anelka are the type of player we are looking to secure. I think we need to build a side which will challenge for the next 18 games but will not have to be sold off for the 2013/14 championship push. For that reason I think we should sign players like Charlie Austin who will put in the effort. Effort has been severely lacking by those signed described as having 'Premiership experience' It counts for little if you cannot be bothered. Hopefully we can offload some of the lazy !?&%$#* It's crazy to think that some of our signings have failed so miserably, but hey ho, we've all had relegation days. The fallout from the top flight could also be dramatic, another chapter in the pantomime that my club have become.
Hi Hoopy What is the plan to get rid of players to make way for any new ones? Who is going to want them? Who is going to pay them well enough to make them want to leave? That could be one serious sticking point for January - making room for the new boys, unless you get a load of loan players in and that can be every bit as bad (we know, it killed us in the Championship)
If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't that the option 'carrabuh' wanted us to choose vefore the start of last season???
i'm afraid it was, but having said that, getting a balance between experience and up-and-coming players is the best scenario for clubs such as ourselves. we couldn't afford to do that last summer as the experienced premier league players were on huge wages. i think we've seen an increase in quality this season with the additions of turner and bassong who are proven, premier league players. however, we've also added the likes of snodgrass to the ranks. can you imagine qpr ever buying someone like him? no, me neither. good post by hoopy by the way
Fernandes has said now that when they signed those players everyone was patting him on the back saying what great players. If that's true then he should have asked me instead of these overpaid experts cos it was clearly an expensive disaster waiting to happen.
