The Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew has ruled out striker, Shola Ameobi from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Pardew claims that the head coach of the Nigerian national team, Stephen Keshi knows the reasons he has asked the player to stay away from the competition.

Ameobi has been in impressive form for Newcastle this season and scored the winner as Newcastle beat Queens Parks Rangers 1-0 in the Barclays English Premier League at the weekend.

The forward was included in Nigeria’s provisional 32-man squad for the 2013 Afcon by Keshi on December 21.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reacted to the development stating that Newcastle cannot hold on to the player if he is eventually listed in the final 23-man squad of Nigeria for the Nations Cup.

“Keshi never told us that Ameobi will not be available for the Cup of Nations when he was included in the 32-man provisional list. The Cup of Nations is a competition sanctioned by Fifa and I am sure Newcastle knows that. We will do all within our power to secure the release of all our players for the competition,” Olajire told supersport.com.

Ameobi, 31, has made just one appearance for Nigeria.

I didn't think Pardew had the power to prevent a player representing his country at the AFrican Nations Cup if selected. If I was Shola I'd tell him where to go, especially seeing how many times Shola actually starts Premier games.

I'd agree with you. Seems a bit of an insult to him to repeatedly not play him with all the injuries we've had, the potential case that Ba and Cisse can't play together effectively etc, then tell him he's too important to be allowed to represent a national side.

To me, this says Pardew knows there's going to be a ****storm in January and that every back-up to the back-up's hand will be needed to put out an 11. So, Ba out and no replacement? Hopefully that's just my mind reading too much into it. Whether you think it's right or wrong Shola can't get a game, I think this is a very disrespectful move by Pardew unless said ****storm is blowing close.

this is what I was thinking earlier today
especially when he said his reason's for this is " between Keshi and himself "

he has made his statement saying Shola wasn't going, public, so why not his reasons ???

Hopefully it's just a horrible love affair turned sour, and Shola is caught in the middle of it... Maybe with a bit of Christmas inspiration he'll get them back together using his secret twin brother :bandit:

Starting to worry about Jan now... Might be a Crappy New Year <wah>

Let's hope the reason isn't because Ba is leaving, that leaves us with Cisse and Shola as our only strikers.

Not sure its right to be honest from Pardew. However he is only doing what many others have in the past, Newcastle United is his concern at the end of it all.

It all depends on Shola really and what his thoughts are currently. Obviously he gave the interview to the BBC saying he'd love to be involved but I'm sure I remember another where he said it would depend if Newcastle needed him. Its up to Shola regardless of Pards comments and he will have to decide. But he does need to respect Nigeria and understand you can't pick and choose. Difficult for him because he loves the club.

Pardew getting the nod about Ameobi from FA Headquarters? Surely not!

Supposedly there is a clause in Sholas contract which we can exercise so Pards is well within his rights if so.

Okay, if Pardew has reasons why he will not sanction Shola to play in the ACON, then why would he sanction Tiote to go ?

His concerns cannot be around security and safety for example, as why would Shola be unsafe and Tiote okay. If it stems from the club needing Shola more than Nigeria does, then ditto with Tiote, the club needs him more than the the Ivory Coast does.

Really cannot understand any circumstances whereby one player is sanctioned to go and another is not. Makes no sense to me at all.

No clause in his contract I suspect. Shola obviously agreed to one out of commitment to the club. I think the fears over Ba's clause, his obvious tiredness and the thinness of the squad means Pards is loathe to risk it. We have other priorities in the window too. Only thing I would say is young Campbell is fit, is it not ideal time to give him some time as an impact player?

Also, Nigeria are gonna appeal to FIFA to ban Shola in the league.

    Anybody hoping it's successful?

No and if this clause is in existence they'll be wasting their time as it will be Shola who has to turn down the call.
