My grandfather was a ex city player for 2 seasons in the early 1920s only making a handfull of appeaerances before moving onto a few other teams. what i would like to ask to any of the older city supporters are there any memorys of the pub as i was told as a young kid that it was a pub that the city players would often drink in. sadly it was knocked down when i was young and now the hull daily mail is on the site. my grandfather was tom Adey who died again when i was young so i never got chance to ask all the questions i wish i could. im a proud city supporter and even prouder to say a family member has worn the amber and black.
Have a look at this: http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/lost-pubs-of-hull-T-to-Z.php Paul Gibson has done a fair amount of work on old Hull pubs and Hull Brewery.
I used to drink in there when I was at the old College of Commerce in Brunswick Ave. The beer used to be delivered by tanker and the drayman would come into the 'lounge', move a table, roll up the carpet, lift a trap-door and feed a (roughly 4") flexi-hose down into the cellar to fill the big stone vat(s) down there. The Polar Bear originally had the same system, and it's possible that a number of other Hull Brewery pubs did also.
[The queens Head in Hedon was the same, beer delivered by tanker when it was a hull brewery pub, was a brilliant pint.QUOTE=StanIsTheMan;3970346]I used to drink in there when I was at the old College of Commerce in Brunswick Ave. The beer used to be delivered by tanker and the drayman would come into the 'lounge', move a table, roll up the carpet, lift a trap-door and feed a (roughly 4") flexi-hose down into the cellar to fill the big stone vat(s) down there. The tank on the tanker was made of steel, but painted to look like wood grain (like folks used on front doors). Can't find a pic of one, but there'll be one somewhere....
cheers stan for your input great stuff i found a couple of pictures at home but 1 of them im unable to upload due to size. once again thanks
I was infact there on the very evening it closed......I think!!!! there used to be all the stuffed fish and birds in the glass cases, the last I saw of them was when they appared in the Spring Bank Tavern. In the Old Zoo the walls all leaned one way or the other and there was a small step down as you walked in. Sad how you remember these things.
You've just reminded me of that step - I recall seeing people go flying arse-over-tip 'cos they missed it, going into the pub. And the stinking khazi out back!
cheers stan that picture i did find on the net but to be honest i havnt got a clue where i got it from, i do have a orignal copy of my grandad as lad outside the pub and the picture which i couldnt load up was a hull daily mail picture which must have been taken from over the road where the car park is, it shows all the buildings next to and near the pub and down spring bank. i think it was from late 70s but gives a good view of that general area. i will try and get a copy online. my great grandfather had the pub before and after the 2nd world war so did get a few stories from my grandad who has now past away, the pub was very lucky during the war as from what i was told more or less most of the buildings around were badly damaged. blundells got hit hard appartently, the war was probably why i hear that everything in the pub was unlevel due to the surrounding damage.
Happy days......beer used to be the best in town, top pie and peas and I'd forgotten about the sloping walls which as I recall used to make the floor wonky as well.....mind that could be because I'd enjoyed too much lotion.......can remember when they knocked everything down around the Zoo and it just stood there on it's own - any piss up in town usually started there, then Star & Garter, Star of the West.......
Some good old ones here - dunno where 'M-S' is though: http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/the-lost-pubs-of-hull.php http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/lost-pubs-of-hull-C-to-E.php http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/lost-pubs-of-hull-F-to-L.php http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/lost-pubs-of-hull-T-to-Z.php
