When Alan Pardew signed an eight year contract it raised more than a few eyebrows.

Mike Ashley has proved himself one for the unexpected but many fans believed that despite the length of the contract, there would undoubtedly be a get-out option for Newcastle United’s owner if things turned sour. It would have been very hard to believe that Ashley would expose himself to a pay-off of six or seven years wages.

Today has brought confirmation/claims that this is the case with the Sunday People revealing that the manager would be entitled to the equivalent of just one year’s wages if he was dismissed.

Gimmicks such as announcing eight year contracts are an unnecessary distraction in attempting to portray that the club are setting long-term foundations.

The only way to put down long-term foundations is by actions and that means backing Alan Pardew and Graham Carr’s recommendations in recruiting players to help take the club forward.

Mike Ashley failed Alan Pardew in the summer, there are encouraging signs that the owner has realised that he got it wrong in that transfer window and let’s hope for all of our sakes that we come out of January with a stronger squad, rather than more gimmicks like eight year contracts.

I've put the above up as I know a few of you chaps have asked this very question.
I'd say he would be on around £750k a year tops so not a great deal of outlay if ever he wanted to get rid of Pards.

    The People article in full....

Under-pressure Newcastle boss Alan Pardew would only receive a pay-off in the region of 12 months’ wages if he was to leave St James’ Park despite his eight-year contract, Sunday People Sport understands.

Pardew signed the long contract in September after last season’s heroics and the club – which has seen plenty of managers in recent years – wanted to reward him and signal stability.

But it is believed there is a fixed departure fee should Pardew leave Newcastle for any reason – and this is understood to be for a year’s pay.

Nobody would be happier than owner Mike Ashley and his managing director Derek Llambias if Pardew was still at St James’ Park when his extended contract expires in 2020 – because it would mean Pardew had brought success and the Toon’s near 50-year wait for a trophy was over.

However, given the Premier League managerial merry-go-round, and the fact that Newcastle have had to make big pay-outs to former managers including Sam Allardyce and Graeme Souness, the club could not countenance paying Pardew eight years’ wages and bonuses should he leave.

In his time on Tyneside, Souness famously declared said that any Newcastle manager is never more than two games away from the sack.Pardew holds the Premier League Manager of the Year and the LMA Manager of the Year awards after he guided Newcastle to an excellent first full season in his charge.

But Newcastle’s recent terrible form has seen him under real pressure for the first time in his two years at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have not won away from home in any competition this season – and their next two games are at Manchester United on Boxing Day and Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday night.

But, whatever the future holds, Pardew can certainly enjoy his Christmas lunch a bit more after their 1-0 home win over QPR yesterday.

Be better if this hadn't come to light to be honest.

I knew there'd be a catch because Ashley isn't stupid when it comes to business. Just football.

Ashley is a shrewd business man and it comes as no surprise to find a get out clause in the contract.

Yep. Most of us saw it coming I guess. Mike Ashley is too smart for this, especially not after Keegan

I don't see the issue, he's secured Pardew's service's for 8 years, but protected the club by having a pre-agreed severance term. I'll assume that the term would alter depending on any success we have during Perdew's tenure, also he's probably incentivised by bonus depending on league position, cup run and other such factors.
