ALAN PARDEW has revealed that Newcastle United have cancelled Christmas as a show of respect to the Toon Army.

With United now just two points above the relegation zone after their 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City, Pardew explained that he had to put a stop to festive partying in order to maintain focus on the task in hand in the Premier League. Toon stars usually hold their Christmas night out around this time of year and have been to both Dublin and Glasgow in recent years.

But Pardew acted quickly to call off plans for a team get-together over the weekend.

He told the Chronicle: “It’s out of respect to our fans, and what we’ve served them this year.

“There’s no party for us, and the same for the staff. That’s how it should be.”

Angered by suggestions that Newcastle weren’t working hard enough during their poor run, Pardew wanted to make the situation crystal clear to supporters.

He said: “Trust me, there have been horrible things said about our group and our staff, but we’re together.

“And we’re fighting and trying to put it right. The fans have to realise this isn’t just a game to us – it’s our livelihoods and our profession. It pays our bills.

“Not only that, we have to have a certain pressure of entertaining our fans who pay good money to come and watch.”

Newcastle showed signs of improvement against Man City but by that time they were 2-0 down. However, a 30-minute attacking display did at one point have the champions under the cosh.

Yet after Newcastle finally succumbed to a 3-1 loss, Pardew believes that even victory over Man City would not have justified a festive party.

The Toon boss said: “Looking at all those factors – we’ve not done enough this year.

“That’s why I think it’s right we called it off.”

I'd have still kept it though. Could be good for morale.

Fighting talk, I like it. Time to stick together and knuckle down as a club.

I personally wouldn't have been arsed if they'd had a night out and got smashed. I understand fully why they haven't though, Saturday is a big game and Pardew is bang on the money. Our fans deserve the players giving the best they can. The better the prep, the better we'll go.

Oh, a sheet of carbon paper you mean.

Can't have the poor old tea lady/cleaner starting to have to polish trophies at her age.

    Hi, lads
Christmas is cancelled at QPR as well (no surprise)
Should be an interesting game on Saturday, two teams that both need to win
Pardew will be under a lot of pressure if you fail to win but it wont be easy against an improved QPR
You would of won comfortably against us with Mark Hughes in charge but Harry Redknapp knows what he is doing
Newcastle have much more firepower up front but QPR can more than match you in midfield and we are unbeaten under Redknapp

I think you may sneak it by the odd goal because of your huge support

Glad you got your first win on Saturday, pressures off us now! Half of our attack is misfiring at the minute, our defence is somewhat undermanned, but it's a big game on Saturday!

Seeing as most footballers spend half their time in clubs - allegedly - I can't see why they need a Christmas night out.
Mind you, I'm only jealous of their money, looks, talent....<whistle>
