That's a valient effort, but it doesn't alter the definition of 'progress'.

When you talk of billionaire owners taking over a club, buying decent/solid players and playing some decent football, it almost sounds like Tony Fernandez at QPR...

I most certainly would - Shame Roman Abramovic didn't see it that way. <ok>

I'll refer you to my post regarding Chelsea finishing 5th but winning the Champions League and FA Cup = progress <ok>

Or Everton then? Finishing 8th/9th each season but progressing their team to a level so they can eventually challenge for 4th? They've got their strongest team in years now but haven't constantly been improving their league placing each season.

So Newcastle finishing 5th - our highest placing for years, should now be ignored because it was last season?

A few double standards slipping into your 'points' now. <ok>

That's right, Everton is an excellent example - they keep their manager through thick and thin (finishing 17th) and eventually they come good.

I think you've finally made some 'progress' here. <cheers>

Not really, because our performances haven't progressed, our set plays haven't progressed, we're still playing the suicidal high line. Progress would be improving these things such as Everton have done over time, they now play some cracking football as well as having a solid back four. It's about laying foundations and I don't believe we're doing that currently.

David Moyes has over a decade at Everton. He's qualified for Europe and narrowly avoided relegation.

    Swings and roundabouts.

Do you think Everton fans wanted him sacked when they were struggling?

Of course, but the board saw sense in the stability.

I'm sure even you can find the point of this one.

I went tonight and I have to say I disagree, the match was very even and we played much better than I thought we would. We were very unlucky; hitting the woodwork at least 3 times and having 20 shots in total. We have been struck by a rout of injuries but our form is improving. You have got to be joking, surely?

Blackburn, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Birmingham all kept their managers but they went down. Every situation is different...by your reckoning if we keep Pardew long enough he'll emulate what Ferguson has achieved.

    My reckoning?

Nope, you gave examples from Chelsea and Everton and I have simply pointed out what has happened.

You're right, every situation is different - so I suppose you using Everton as an example was irelevant?

    Well played.

You've gone past even wanting to debate now, it's just getting stupid <ok>

Every situation is different, given our current situation I want the manager removed from his position, you don't...I can live with that. We'll have to agree to disagree <ok>

Fulham hit the woodwork twice, had 4 one on one's with Krul and created the clearer chances. A point may have just about been deserved, but out of our 20 shots how many were from 25/30 yards and either off target or straight at their keeper?

    What?

Don't blame me because you've managed to confuse yourself by giving poor examples of other clubs 'success'.

Chelsea win trophies because their owner throws enough money at the squad and at management changes.
Everton don't win trophies and they have differing results/finishes in the PL. This is owing to the fact they have very little money.

Which of those clubs most closely resemble Newcastle United?

We have to cut our cloth accordingly - Pardew has the backing of the board and the majority of the fans thus far.

    Agree to disagree? Yes, quite.

Outrageous, just when Newcastle seemed to have some stability some fans want to chuck it away in favour of a new manager just because you've hit a poor patch with a lot of your key players injured & suspended or just lost a bit of form.

If Pardew were to be sacked Newcastle would lose all credibility and you'd be lucky if any manager would want to take you over, let alone a good one.

Not confused about anything mate. Everton were a good example, they kept Moyes because the season they finished 17th Weir & Stubbs were his Cb's, he also had Carsley in midfield, he had an ageing side and was bringing youngsters through to lower the age of his squad. Due to this they knew results would be indifferent.

You see, this was the progress I was on about earlier when saying long term progress can be made even if league position slips (something I don't believe we're currently doing).

They kept David Moyes because their board believe in stability.

If you were an Arsenal fan, would you sack Wenger just now?

They appear to be going backwards... oh I forgot, every situation is different, right?

Arsenal have had defensive problems for years and these haven't improved over time, if anything they've got worse. So yeah his position would certainly be under threat because as manager it's his job to resolve said issue.

    Did you want Allardyce sacked?

    Wenger out eh? <doh>

No, I didn't want our manager sacked before he had a chance to get things the way he wanted them - look at how West Ham have benefited from giving him the benefit of time - even though he didn't get automatic promotion from the Championship.
Allardyce was sacked on the whim of Mike Ashley trying to re-live past glories. <ok> I wasn't enjoying the football, but then i'm not enjoying it right now!
