Aston Villa, Newcastle and Norwich will have FC Cluj winger Modou Sougou watched at Manchester United on Wedneday night.
Sougou, 27, impressed against United in October and caught the eye again, scoring against Galatasaray last month.
Swansea and Bolton are also among a clutch of clubs watching the Senegal international, who is available for around £2million and wants to leave Romania in January.

Catching the eye: Modou Sougou is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs
Sougou has a Portuguese passport which will enable him to pick up a work permit should a move to a Barclays Premier League club be forthcoming.
Newcastle have also made an enquiry for Atletico Mineiro right back Marcos Rocha, 23, in case they fail to prise Mathieu Debuchy from Lille.

Can't say I have noticed either when watching these sides. Not that I'm an avid watcher either of course.

The Senegal connection could be a draw, he should settle in well.

Nice to know we're still active behind the scenes, more of Carr's work no doubt.

Newcastle United are hunting FC Cluj winger Modou Sougou, he could be another Alan Pardew bargain this January.

Not many will know a great deal about Modou Sougou, the FC Cluj winger terrorising full backs in the Romanian League. Newcastle have reportedly had him watched in recent games and they could sign him for as little as £2 million when the January transfer window opens.

The wide man has started in all of Cluj’s Champions League matches this season and could add a great deal to the Newcastle United team. He is very slender and slight which means his obvious assets are pace, trickery and movement. He does not look like the sort of player who is going to brush a defender off the ball so it’s all about utilising the space in between players and in behind the defence.

He only joined the Romanian champions last season as he helped them on their way to the league title. He has enjoyed some time in the limelight due to the way he has played in the Champions League despite the fact the club narrowly missed out ion qualification to the last 16 of the competition.

The same reports linking Newcastle with a bid for the player also suggest that he has told Cluj that he wants to leave this winter which would allow the club to justify the price they are asking any club to play. The problem for Newcastle seems to be the permit issue which could delay Sougou’s transfer.

However, he holds a Portuguese passport which means the paperwork should be relatively straight forward, barring any complications, allowing Newcastle get a bid in during the early part of January and then work through the paperwork with a view to agreeing personal terms and sorting out a medical in the middle of the month.

The edge that Newcastle have when compared with other teams that have been linked with the player; Norwich City, Aston Villa and Swansea City, is the fact that manager Alan Pardew is very experienced when it comes to bringing these sort of players into the club.

He signed Yohan Cabaye for just under £5 million in the summer of 2011 and Gael Bigirimana for £1 million could be another astute piece of business. He has a way of bringing in gifted players for a cheap transfer fee and then building them up into much better players.

If Sougou signs for a fee of around £2 million and has a similar effect at the club to the above players then it could be considered one of Newcastle’s greatest ever purchases.

These are the sort of players I expect us to go for in Jan, not expensive signings like Cisse, Anita etc. but a few million, as squad players/competition
