Played club cricket...Hertfordshire League, Thames Valley League, Middlesex League...for about 25 years as a seam bowler. Still sore I never quite managed to score a hundred, but took plenty of wickets. Played in the school rugby team but was a bit lightweight and preferred youth club soccer anyway. At uni started playing league badminton and table tennis and kept those up for a while. Nowadays I'm happy just to keep reasonably fit and I think I might sneak into our All Star XI on the wing...close enough to the touchline for a reviving swig of ale now and again.
One of the reasons I chose to live in Christchurch was because it was somewhere I could get a job AND live an hour and a half of ski slopes. Trouble is I used to ski more when I lived in London! In football I played either midfield or full back, usually on the left if we had no left footed players. I represented my school at football and rugby, which is a joke because I'm only 5' 5"; also at athletics and cross country. I've ever been any good at racket sports, golf or cricket - no hand/eye co-ordination. Up until the children arrived I did a fair bit of mountain biking and if I had a bit more time I'd like to do more rogaining, which is a bit like orienteering.
I have no natural skill at football - but as in most things I hate to lose - so what I lacked in skill I made up for in effort - being quite quick I used to be a fair full back - can play left or right and used to enjoy overlapping as unlike Doyley I was fast enough to go forward and still be back in time to cover if I needed to
Oh school sports - played hockey and all the others, but only played hockey for the school. I went to a non football school, such a shame as I now play with the Dads and lads as a Eustace - a tackler who can spot a pass. But I am a terrible loser and hate cheats. Why are we all such short arses? I'm only 5 foot 8, so we'd be crap at corners! As for watching sport, I am desperate to go to the Isle of Man and see the TT. Has anyone seen the Guy Martin film "Cloer to the Edge"? He is such a class act, but my kids think he's a scruff. The missus doesn't like my biking past, hence I've never taken her to the magic Isle. There is plenty of sport to keep me watching through the summer - except Golf. Although a mate has started taking me down the driving range. That reminds me of a free holiday I got off an ex girlfriend - her folks had moved to Portugal to play golf full-time. She hadn't told them we'd broken up a year before! It was the best "care free" fun I ever had (and I still had a soft spot for her).
Why are we all such short arses? I'm only 5 foot 8, so we'd be crap at corners! Im 6`2 , but if I went up for an attacking corner ,it might take me a while to get back
Elixir, though I don't remember it in much detail I was taken annually to the Isle of Man as a kid and certainly saw the TT from Craig na Baa (not sure about spelling but it's where you can see the bikes decend a long hill into a sharp right hand corner) in the early 50s. I think Geoff Duke was the name on people's lips back then.
Would be up for a game of chess online if anyone fancies it? Sure there must be a website that does online chess...
Skype used to I dont know if they stilll do! In the old days when away from home I played my dad using snailmail!! I would be up for a game!
Toby - I am very very rusty - in fact not played for years but there is nothing to stop us having a chess match using on e of the threads here - unless there is an easier way - might take a bit of time though
Lads! Height and speed are sorted! I play along the Left either LB or LM and i'm left footed! With my height at 6 foot 3 we'd be sorted for corners. My speed is decent as i''ll kick it in another gear just to cover back when attacking! I love to Ski, and have taken a hige interest in Tennis recently, so they'd sort me out perfectly!
True enough apart from John , Martin ,Adrian ,Danny etc and all the kids have gained a hell of a lot of experience this season
Yeah Icehockeys good, never had a chance to play ,crap skater , But was introduced to it whilst in Vancouver, and taught not to try and follow the puck but watch where players are going! Go the Canucks!
