I don't follow it. I love International Rubgy Union though - perhaps more than International football. I've got friends in Wisconsin so if asked i'll say Greenbay Packers, but i've no interest if i'm honest.
I've tried to watch the Superbowl a few times but always fall asleep after 10 mins. I don't get how a sport that's so stop-start can be so popular. The breaks between plays last longer than the action <yawn> American Chuckball aint for me.
Yeah the ads are desperate. I'm into too many other sports. Footy obviously, but also rugby, cricket, F1, BTCC, snooker bit of tennis! Not much room for American handball.
Probably top 3 for me is Footy,NBA, Tennis. Just really catch everything else if it is on or just see highlights.
Loads of people, or so I've read, really enjoy the breaks and some even exclusively watch the superbowl for the adverts. I don't know if there are some superb adverts in America but that just seems ****ing ridiculous to me. I watch sport to watch sport, not to see the new range of chips on offer at McDonalds. 4 hours for one game seems excessive too. But is it any different to say the FA cup in the olden days where the build up was on TV all day? The only thing different really is that the FA cup build up was optional, you HAVE to watch the superbowl adverts.
Advertising during the Superbowl cost millions an million of dollars so companies make an extra effort to make the commercials funnier and the girls in the commercials hotter.
i have to say i've been over here for a week and a half nearly. these guys are as obsessed as we are but they really go into every team, hate the dallas cowboys and really really spend more time talking college football than NFL almost. I think its a pretty weak effort really as a sport cos its as bad in many was as taking the worst parts of rugby and cricket... and moshing up a sport. you've endless interuptions and resets you've mouthy officals who're contantly dropping flags and i really don't think there's that much to it. their teams are giant numbers of guys some of whom are literally just there to do nothing but get in the way. i agree on rugby union played well i can't stand rugby league mind.
I dunno, I think I switch heads with sports. Obviously I'm most comfortable with football; I love international Union, not as fussed on provincial although follow Ulster to an extent. Never got into league. Can watch pretty much anything though. Tried & failed to get into NFL when I was younger due to time it was on. I sleep little these days so don't need match-sticks to watch it & multiple channeled replay best games ( if you don't like ads & have sky watch on Mondays (or us it Thursdays ) takes out all the breaks. But As I said earlier think college is quicker but I think really (yanks can confirm or deny) its an all day/night event for US followers of all aapects of game be it going to game or the social event at home with the game on the box, beer & grub. To be honest I miss the same thing we use to do with the FA cup. Obviously better if it was your team but we use to as teenagers go to the pub with all the dads, uncles, friends after playing a charity footy/hockey game in the morning, get the burgers, place the bets, play some pool, lots of banter in a packed pub no matter who was playing, then on to pub/club with music. It all seemed to stop when the generation above me stopped going. Real shame as it was a real community/ blokes getting together thing. I'm assuming it still happens mainland way?
Perhaps yanks are more interested in stuffing their faces than in the sport itself? Really, it's just commercialism isn't it? Money comes before all else, and every human endeavour is seen as an opportunity for someone to sell you something. Sadly, all of these things make their way over here in the end. It's only a matter of time before we have bloody cheerleaders at footie games.
One thing that is good about NFL, college American football is the tailgating. Get there early, get your spot, meet up with the other people and start cooking and drinking early doors. Then you go about, sample the other grub, chat up about the team who is good, sucks, fantasy, etc all hours and hours before the game. Game starts and you waddle in to the stadium, no need to pay the 8$ per beer, already "pre-game" before hand so are good to go. Only fun part of any american football for me, probably due to the beer and the women.
Oi! Fu<king leave cricket out of this. It's the finest sport there is in test match format, including football, and I'm a hardened Scouse Red
American football can be boring which is why highlights are a good option but cricket is imo the most ridiculous sport in the world by a long way, im not sure it should be even considered a sport.
Gotta agree with RHC there, Test Cricket in its purest form is superb! However, do hate ODIs (one day internationals) and getting very bored of T20 cricket...
One of my favourite hot summer Sundays: day spent sitting on local cricket club pavilion, alternating pints with cold G&T's, shouting occasional abuse at the visiting teams bowlers? What's not to like?
