If he wanted to stay at Leeds so badly, why did he set his wage demands so high? Warnock didn't keep him because we couldn't afford to keep all three of Mccormack, Snodgrass and Clayton (Warnock didn't know at the time Snodgrass was going to go to Norwich). So it's Clayton's own fault he is still not at Leeds Utd, all the talk before, and then celebrating like that in front of Warnock and then going on to lose the game, made him look like a right prick
I'm not sure his wage demands really were that high, £7k-£9k weren't they? He'd probably have got that at any other team in the league.
This is the quote by Bates himself: "There is one individual whose agent has demanded £15,000 a week for him. That is £780,000 a year and with taxes, you are looking at nearly £900,000 a year, for a footballer in the championship. That is the equivalent of the gate receipts from four home games in a season. It is ridiculous, good luck to the guy if he gets it elsewhere." This is what Warnock said at the time: "I’m looking to sign midfield players, and the contract Adam’s representatives were looking for, we weren’t prepared to go to that extent. Coming into the last year [of Clayton’s contract at Leeds United] it makes sense to see if they can get that offer somewhere else and if we can get an appropriate figure it’s the sort of money I can use to improve the squad … Adam has probably had more games than anyone else, but looking at that area I have my own ideas about players I’d like to bring in and that’s what I’m looking for really." http://www.thescratchingshed.com/2012/05/kens-fanfare-for-the-common-fan/
OK, I was told he was asking for 15k, but even if it was less than that, if Warnock could not afford the wages he wanted, then it's not simply of case that he did not rate him. Celebrating in front of Warnock like that was totally out of order in my opinion, I hope he feel embarrassed
On one level, Clayton was a class act & a player a Manager could have built a team round. Problem is, he didn't run the game as often as he should have done. So good luck to him. But we move on & now have better players.
To be honest I couldn't care less what he does at Huddersfield. I liked him while he was here, although he was a bit too inconsistent for my liking. However, he's left now. I wish him all the best in the future, and I don't hold any grudges, he's entitled to ask for whatever wage he and his agent think is fair. But he's gone now, so it matters not. We have a much better midfield this year anyway
I was dissapointed as anyone when he went, but I reckon he rates himself higher than he really is, probably encouraged by his agent, which is why he still isn't at Leeds Utd. Good luck to him, but celebrating like that won't win him many admirers
No problem? So if I shoot you dead, I can apologise an hour later and that's the end of it? Yeah, right!
No, but if he insulted you in the heat of the moment then went up to you to apologise later I'd hope so.
So where do you draw the line? Can I punch his lights out in the heat of the moment then apologise to make things ok?
Clayton didn't punch Colin in the face though, did he? He slid on his knees in front of him, far from classy but hardly something you can't come back from. I could point out that Warnock's forgiven Diouf for worse than that.
Some people are taking things too far. Shoot someone? Punch someone? He celebrated inappropriately and apologised. Simple. Warnock accepted it. Its over.
As I asked earlier, where do you draw the line? Shooting? No. Punching? No? Fair enough. Don't disagree. But being guilty of 'ungentlemany conduct' and 'bringing the game into disrepute' spring to mind. Are we allowed to forgive some but not others? If I was Warnock, I would have made a formal complaint to the FA, asking for Clayton to be charged on both counts. And then I would apologise to Clayton, making it all ok, of course.
Its obvious where they draw the line, celebrating inappropriately and then apologising later for it And on a separate note, thats hardly "bringing the game into disrepute".
Clayton made a statement. Cashley Cole did the same with his 'twats' tweet. Both equally public, both in breach of preofesional standards. Both apologised, but only one apology was accepted. Consistent? As I said, where do you draw the line? It's so subjective.
