Who keeps voting for Gazzaniga?!? Explain yourselves!! I don't get the whole "let him keep his confidence" argument. If this is how he plays when he's confident, then I'd hate to see what happens when he gets nervous! And if he's already not confident, why keep throwing him out there when with each mistake and each game he just makes it worse?
For me it is a straight forward choice. Nigel either backs him and lets him get the needed experience knowing the risks plus the possible benefits, or takes a chance on Boruc and possibly undermines a possible future star. The latter choice could also have a severely detrimental effect long term on Gazza and his confidence.
For me I don't think we have the luxury of a choice. Gazza is the best of the current bunch without a doubt. I think come the January window we will have yet another keeper who does have the experience. An error of Judgement in my view to expect such a youngster to perform week in week out at this level. What other team in the UK or Europe plays a similar aged goalkeeper at such a high level? They don't for a very good reason they cannot afford the "learning errors". We as a team would be well out of the danger zone but for some glaring errors by the youngster. It could be crucial the points dropped come the end of the season!!
Like all youngsters, its good to give them a taste of it and some experience - now Gazza has had that, time to withdraw him. No shame in that. Reality is he`s not ready. What happens if he has a mare at Anfield, makes more blunders, maybe even gets subbed - that would be a shame. Time for Boruc to claim the shirt.
Oops, did someone disagree with your opinion. shame. I voted Boruc, but it was very close. I'd back Nigel if he decided to stick with Gazza. Listen to Peter Schmeichel talking about Krul after we beat Newcastle; he points out that the focus will be on the two "errors" he made for the gaols, but people will ignore the 6 or 7 good saves he made. It's just the way it goes. I saw Rickie Lambert miss two chances last night, anyone think he should be dropped?
I'm not really sure what it is exactly, but I like the lad Gazzaniga. It might be the fact that he fits in with the ethos, and that if he's playing regularly now he will grow with what is increasingly looking like a very capable, young team. He's made some mistakes but he's made some very good saves. We're still picking up points and I'm pretty confident he's going to continue to develop - I'd rather see him play.
It's funny when I suggest after the Newcastle game that Gazza was still fragile and prone to cock ups I was jumped on. And look what happened. Time to bring in Boruc.
Where has this myth come from?! One swallow doesn't make a summer. Equally, two throwing one water bottle into an advertising hoarding doesn't make a proven, world class 'keeper suddenly ****. Boruc is technically and mentally leagues superior to Gazzaniga as a goalkeeper.
What are you talking about? Clearly, someone with about 20 decent League Two games under his belt is without a doubt better than a keeper considered top class for several years.
Boruc may have been class but who to say he is now?, we won't know until we play him and I don't think it'll be against Liverpool.
Relax man, it was a joke. People obviously don't have to explain themselves to me, because I'm no one. It would be nice to hear some reasons though, just because this is a discussion board. Gazza had the most votes at the time, but the vast majority of people who posted their thoughts were in favor of Boruc. That's all I meant. Just trying to hear some different opinions. As for Lambert, we know he has been very good throughout his history with Saints, and even this year in the Prem. Boruc has a long track record of being good at fairly high levels. Davis has a track record with the Saints that is at least pretty good. There are of course doubts whether those players can continue to perform due to ge/mental state/change in league. But Gazzaniga doesn't even have a track record. He's only played a few games and his best performance was only average and the rest were rather awful. The one thing I like about Gazza is his killing time/ability to boot the ball some way with accuracy. It doesn't show in the stats so maybe I'm biased but to me, I think his kicking ability makes a difference. Davis can't kick either very far or well so he plays it from the back which puts everyone under pressure. Since our offense is better than our defense, you are putting the ball into the feet of the weakest link. Gazzaniga if he kicks it long, 50% or whatever is fine. If the offense gets it, it's a much better chance to score. If they don't, then the whole team (and most of our offense is good about challenging without the ball) gets a chance to defend/slow down the opposition. Of course Gazzaniga undercuts that strength when he makes foolish decisions with the ball, and I feel like right now, his general shakiness in all things outweighs the potential ability of his kicking and the odd excellent save. But that's just like, my opinion man. If it were me, I would have had Davis or Boruc start against the weaker sides where we can play from the back and hold the ball. And then start Gazzaniga against the stronger sides. The pressure is off that way as no one expects a win. He'll certainly get a lot of experience. And his long ball ability gives us a chance to get lucky on a longball and steal a few points maybe. But Nigel is an ex-GK himself and we all know he made the occasional awful play. NA has earned himself a lot of slack so if NA goes with Gazzaniga next game I'll be okay with it.
