taking the distance into account, i'd assume that most cars would be full. but good luck in your quest.
i myself am going up on train like i did for everton, hurts the pocket a fair bit tho!

    Have you tried the trainline?

Also, try getting a day travel card to London and then seeing about getting London Terminals to Liverpool, it would probably be a lot cheaper than just getting a return from Southampton.

Or don't even get a travel card, get a ticket to London terminals, then walk from Waterloo to Euston (it's not that far)

or better yet if your agedbetween 16 - 25 you can buy the 1625 railcard for £28 can be used to buy both tickets and will save both of you 1/3 this card allows anywhere in the UK not just the london zones handy if you plan on doind a few away days big money saver.

@ pompeylapras, the only problem with the trainline when you get a cheap seat there normally a timed ticket, which can be a right pain in the arse, i've had that before and my link up train was cancealed and had to pay full fare again.

Oh yes, definitely get a rail card. They're amazing things and one trip to Liverpool and you've probably already saved the cost of the rail card. You can get them either online or at the ticket office, you just need a passport size photo and to fill in some forms. You can do it online but I'm not sure how long it'll take for it to come in the post (it comes normal 1st class), mine took 2 days but it might have been quicker as it was a renewal.

And yep, that's always a risk with buying tickets in advance. However, Southampton to Liverpool is really easy to get to and only requires two trains. One from Southampton Central to Waterloo and then one from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street, so chances are unless you get horrible problems for some reason, it shouldn't be cancelled. And if the train from Southampton to Waterloo is cancelled, then chances are you won't be going anywhere at all by rail for the next few hours.

If you don't mind a longer journey, you may be able to change at Basingstoke and get a Cross Country service and change somewhere else on the route from London to Liverpool. I'm can't remember what stops trains from Euston to Liverpool make, but for example if you were going to Birmingham you could change at say Rugby or Leamington Spa and then get on a train from Euston (ignoring the fact that you can get trains direct to Birmingham from Basingstoke). It'll be longer but as you aren't going through London, you'll save a heap of money.
