I'd take Carroll over Torres, but only because he at least has one use, whereas Torres seems to have none
Shevchenko for me. Purely because he cost loads at the time and they made £0 back on him when he left. At least Man Utd got some of the fee of Veron back. Same with us & Robbie Keane. And we'll probably get something back for Carroll. Torres is definitely heading there though but I reckon he'll still be bought for a decent price because he'll sell shirts wherever he goes even if he's ****.
If we're to compare pasts... yeah Torres by a mile, but.. my dear numpty, on current offerings Torres is a malfunctioning forward at best
If you're talking along those lines then you can say Diouf for us when we could have had Anelka for less
If you were judging transfers on before the players actually played for their team then that transfer would be the worst, but it doesn't work like that. Otherwise Shevchenko & Torres would've looked like bargains...
Yeah, because Carroll is so good at the minute that Liverpool have no strikers and you still don't want him near your team and he plays for the mighty West Ham. Also Carroll has been smashing them in for West Ham, he has been unreal.
You could make a team of flops for each club I'd have thought... There's too many but to throw in some north-eastern ones which haven't been mentioned: Marcelinho (£6m to Newcastle), Owen (£17m to Newcastle - plus years of wages), Tore Andre Flo (£6m to Sunderland), Turner (£12m to Sunderland). Etc.
Torres yes. Carroll close. Scheva Veron Downing Also that Boro signing - i've forgotten his name. Alavez or something?
Jenas is unfairly judged in my opinion. He cost us 7m He was vet good for us in 05/06 when we came 5th. The following season he was injured early on until jan or feb when we were 13th and by the end of the season we climbed to 5th again. In the 07/08 season he was a key figure in us winning the Carling cup. From then on he suffered a lot of injuries and lost his form. but for 3 seasons he was a key player who put in a lot of good performance imo
Jenas was just one of those players who hit a glass ceiling in his talent. Newcastle bought him at the age of 19 and he was very good, it seemed like he was going to be excellent and he represented England and played well. But he never really got any better and eventually seemed to level off then get worse. Not a bad player though, just failed to progress.
Where is is now? Wasn't that long ago he played for England. Remember watching a game with a mate - must of been 08/09.
On loan back to Forest (he's stillat Tottenham overall). It's a shame, a decade ago he was on his way to winning PFA Young Player of the year (at 19) for a fantastic season at Newcastle. But I'm afraid if you can't progress your game under Bobby Robson then you've probably either hit your peak or have a bad attitude.
Not since Keegan's first stint have players gone to Newcastle and improved. Even my mate, a Newky fan, admitted it was like a black hole for players. They went there, and were never heard of again . . . .
Things seem to have changed recently though. Demba Ba, Krul, Ben Arfa etc all seem to have improved since joining them.
