Spurs come into the match in 7th place on 20 points, while Liverpool are in 11th place on 16 points. This will be the 163rd time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came on Boxing Day in 1894 when Liverpool, who had been established just two years earlier after a dispute with Everton, played a friendly at Tottenham Marshes in a game won 3-0 by Spurs. A further visit from Liverpool was even less successful in Easter 1895 with Spurs winning 6-0. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs took place at White Hart Lane in November 1909 with Spurs winning 1-0 thanks to a Bert Middlemiss goal. He became the first Spurs player to score against both Merseyside clubs. The reverse fixture that season was won by Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which had previously been the home of Everton before their move to Goodison Park. All 138 League meetings played to date between Spurs & Liverpool have taken place in the Top Flight of English football. Tottenham's 2-1 First Division win at Anfield in March 1912 would be their last at the ground for 73 years with the jinx finally being broken by a Garth Crooks goal in 1-0 win in March 1985. The first FA Cup meeting came in the 5th Round in March 1968 and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Lane. Liverpool won the replay 2-1. To date, the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Tottenham's only win coming at Anfield in the 6th Round in March 1995 when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann earned a 2-1 victory. The teams first met in the Football League Cup in 1972 and have played 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning four games with two draws. Liverpool's only win came in the 1982 Final at Wembley which was won 3-1 after extra time. Steve Archibald put Spurs ahead but Ronnie Whelan's brace and a goal from Ian Rush ensured that the Reds lifted the silverware. The teams contested the Charity Shield in August that year with League Champions Liverpool beating FA Cup Winners Spurs 1-0. Liverpool are one of three English clubs Spurs have played in European Competitions to date - the other being Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs beat Liverpool in the 1973 UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2-1 with a brace of goals from Martin Peters but a 1-0 win to Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield meant that the Reds progressed to the Final on the away goals rule. Two matches were played in Swaziland in June 1984 reulting in a 5-2 win for Liverpool and a 1-1 draw. In December 1985 and January 1986 the clubs met in the Screen Sport Super Cup - a competition played due to English club's being barred from European competition - with Liverpool winning both matches 2-0. Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present in the competition for the past 21 seasons (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are the other five). The home fixture at White Hart Lane in November 2010 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Liverpool went ahead just before halftime with a goal from Martin Skrtel but Spurs came back in the second half with an own goal from Skrtel after 65 minutes and an injury-time winner from Aaron Lennon. The reverse fixture at Anfield in May 2011 proved to be the UEFA Europa League decider with Spurs winning 2-0 with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and a Luka Modric penalty. During the summer of 2011, Spurs added former Liverpool goalkeeper (1997-2000) Brad Friedel to their playing staff. The game at White Hart Lane in September 2011 was won 4-0 by Spurs with goals from Luka Modric, Jermain Defoe and a brace from new loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor. Liverpool had both Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel sent-off. The match at Anfield in February 2012 finished in a goalless draw, as did a tour match played in Baltimore, USA in July 2012. Liverpool have won 17 of the 40 Premier League matches played so far with Spurs on 12 wins and 11 games drawn. Overall, Liverpool have the upper hand over Spurs with 73 wins to 48 with 41 of the 162 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool Matches 1894-2012 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Liverpool.... The top names in football have only bettered Spurs in recent years, say the last 20 or 25 haven't they? Before that things were quite even between us and the others. Teams have been able to pull away from us in the win count. I see Liverpool have 23 more wins than us which Harry did well to redress and I hope AVB can continue to do so. I feel a close hard fought match on Wednesday with I'd hope a 2-0 win or a 3-1. But I'd be happy with a close 1-0 or a 2-1. They've become a bit unpredictable recently as have we so it's a difficult call.
Stop Suarez and you stop Liverpool - he's scored 10 of their 17 Premier League goals this season. However, that might be easier said than done. But that win over our dear friends from Upton Park must have given the entire squad a huge boost, so I'm going for a Spurs win by the odd goal in three.
Fair comments and great thread starter as usual 61 I think we should play the same team as yesterday, but Dembele for Hudd.
Officially, Bale doesn't have any assists this season but the BBC match reports gave him assists for at least two Premier League goals this season. It just goes to show that the official stats, while useful, never tell the whole story.
Yeah, that is strange, he's created plenty of chances this season but I guess most were for himself. He's got 2 in the Europa League though.
Cheers again, 60-61 looking forward to this one, shame it's not on the box Liverpool have done well over their last 6 prem games and haven't lost. (won 3 drawn 3) as THFC6061 has said, i think if we can stop Suarez, we should win this one. They are of a similar set up to us, but I feel we've got the better players over all in terms of quality. we'll also need Walker to perform like he did yesterday and keep and eye on Raheem sterling. we're going to need something creative though. Liverpool are playing some decent football these days, so we'll need ideas to combat that. Hopefully Sandro will be fine, and Dembele can make a comeback for 90 mins with no problem to his hip. 2-1 is my prediction. THFC6061 - Swansea's 3-1 win over liverpol was a COC game
Shame Ledders has retired, he had a special pocket on his shorts for Suarez! His goofy teeth chuntering away everytime Ledders puts him on his arse! ...love Ledders! For those who've forgot all that...enjoy!
Muchos Gracias THFC6061 Going to be a closer game than last years that's for sure. Suarez (w*nker) has been in great form this season so we'll need to be prepared at the back. Hopefully Mousa can start, if not then I'd like an unchanged line up from the West Ham game. 3-1 Spurs. Defoe, Dempsey & Lennon. Suarez for them. COYS
Afternoon all, Liverpool fan here. Looking forward to this game! We are on a decent unbeaten run (8 games in the league) but 5 of those have been draws. To be honest, I would happily take another draw on Wednesday. I would have felt a little more confident if you hadn't won yesterday as that will give your team a massive confidence boost at just the wrong time for Liverpool! My heart says a 2-0 Liverpool win but my head says a draw or a 2-1 defeat. I'm going to go with 1-1. (Gotta be a little bit positive about the game... ) Here's to a good game!
Our goal difference is a bit laughable compared to the teams above us SoS and I'd like it redressed. Chris, could you please be a little clearer about where you stand on the result. All I get there is "My heart says blither blather blither blather blither blather blither blather." So what do you think the score will be?
I'm undecided! Being serious though, i'm going to go with 1-1. We seem to be the draw specialists at the moment and we also up our game most of the time when we face the bigger sides (City, Chelsea etc.) With that in mind, a 1-1 draw will be my prediction. Defoe is in good form for yourselves so I think he'll get your goal with Sahin getting our goal.
