I know it was given and that cannot reverse anything bar maybe the ref rescinding it or down grading it. For me after watching it a few more times it seemed harsh but, as the rules say he had to go. Some are saying Roses was the same tackle I say look at it again it was from the side and a sliding tackle with one foot getting the ball and no follow through totally different type of tackle. I don't think Hangelands (speling) was malicious but, how many times have we said that about Catts tackling when he has been sent off? A harsh decision for me but, we've had our fair share of them so one for us is fine, next up WBA who we usually don't do that well against against up here will try and get my Millwall mate up for it he has seen us beat them twice at SOL a 2-0 and a 4-0/4-1 ish.
Have to agree it was a little harsh - not surprised it was given though and if it had been Catts we would all have berated him and said that he should know better than to tackle like that. Get the ball or not with those sort of tackles you are always risking a red. Hopefully that win will instil some belief and we can put on a better show against WBA and start moving up the table.
Didn't think it was harsh at all, those are the rules today like em or loathe em. 2 footed studs up, you could see he tried to change his mind half way through but it was too late. Catts was trying to break away not even giving the challenge a second thought, as Pullis did about his player the other week when Gardner flattened him it would be nice if the hatchet pundits applauded Catts reaction, but they just like hitting him don't they? I've actually heard some commentary that the challenge was Catts fault as Hangeland was trying to protect himself, its his fault when he gets fouled now.... pathetic.
Listening to the commentary given by John Gregory, and he thought it was a harsh decision, not in my book, as has been said, if you go in with both feet off the ground, you invite the ref to send you for an early bath. Gregory also said that and i quote, ( if anything it was one of Lee Cattermoles favourite tackles ) Thats as maybe, but if Gregory was to look at the record books he will find that Catts has been red carded every time. I'm not surprised by Gregory's comments as all the match he did nothing but run our club down, which as we all know is par for the course with these toss pots who turn to television work when they cant cut the mustard in the world of management. He should do us all a huge favour and crawl back into his hole.
I was watching with my son ( both Season Carders ) and when we heard that we were gobstruck. Just goes to show how biased Sky are! Also, how did Berba get away without at least a yellow? Twice he put hands to chest and pushed people after the fact, the second of which earned Catts his yellow. We've had players sent off for that - inconsistency does my head in!
Agree completely - had it been Cattermole (who had another good game yesterday) I reckon everyone would say he deserved to go - it was dangerous as he was out of control - it only wasn't dangerous as he didn't hurt someone??? Does that mean that you7 have to hurt someone to make it a deserved red?? Fulham's antics shortly after the red card were discgusting - Damien Duff (scumbag) particularly accusing Bardsley of an elbow! Saw the exact same challenge 3 times in the second half by Fulham players with no free-kick! People said we used the width of the pitch well playing against 10 men but why not do that anyway no matter how many players we're against - it worked - leave Johnson on the touchline and get him on the ball - his pass for the first goal was sublime (as was Fletchers touch and finish!) - As for Sess - where did that come from! Awesome!! Get the ball down and play the game - it works! Bit of a confidence booster yesterday and nobody expected it Could you imagine this accumulator: Norwich win vs Man Utd Reading win vs Everton Swansea win vs Newcastle West Brom win vs Chelsea Us win vs Fulham I could've retired on whatever odds that'd be!!!
Haha too right. i had a tenner on us at 4/1 so nice there but had also said I thought WBA would win so that would have been a lovely double. The rest would have been coupon busters for me for sure. As it was it was the lovely Carlisle who put my £200 6 team accy to bed the tarts.
I wouldn't send him off but under the rules I think the referee has to. Its about consistency in how they apply them. We all know the rules are very soft but they are what they are. Hangeland and every other player knows if you bring your other foot through after it will considered a red. He clearly went for and got the ball, but it matters not really. Have to say thought O'Shea was lucky to stay on. Two deliberate trips near edge of the box, he seemed to determined to make it harder for you yesterday!
Have to say that at full speed it looked a red card - it's only the replays that made it look less dangerous (refs don;t get replays though do they!!) - he was still out of control though with both feet off the ground (and I can guarantee that 99% of people would say it would've been deserved had it been Cattermole!! - Not you mind WP as you seem to be pretty open and honest rather than looking through anti-SAFC/anti-Cattermole tinted specs!) # Re O'Shea's "trips" - the first one the lad took 2 steps before realising he was losing the ball - hardly any contact (reminded me of Larsson's against Wolves last season) - Also twice Berbatov raised his hands and pushed players in the chest but never even got spoken to - in fact Cattermole got booked for being pushed by him??!!
What about the Arsenal vs spurs game, arms were raised yet no cards, have they changed the rules. Anyhow we payed the price for the sendings off and penalties against us in the past so maybe we are getting some desitions for us now.
The strict rules is the thing I hate most about football these days, more than diving or arguing with refs or anything. Ref was right to send him off but it's a joke that he had to. Football WILL be non-contact within a couple of decades. A lot of people say that would never happen, but if I showed someone that tackle in the 1980's people would have said that the day will never come where that's a red card, football is on a slippery slope.
Time was you got carded for the RESULT of a challenge, but these days it's the INTENT that they take notice of. You go in both feet off the ground, you're off, simple as that. I personally think it's fair enough, as everyone knows the rules and we don't have to wait for someone to get a badly broken leg for another round of navel-gazing about what's acceptable and what's not.
Problem is, tackling is a skill just like anything else, and it's perfectly possible to go in with studs showing and feet off the ground and make a brilliant tackle. It's the people who can't manage that that should be punished, not eeryone.
Deluded - I remember watching a game from the 1960's or 70's on a rerun (I'm not that old) where the keeper caught the ball and just got kicked into the back of the net about 3 seconds later - no doubt he had the ball and had hold of it but he got kicked by the centre forward and the goal stood - I saw some bone crunching challenges in the 80's too (I AM that old!!) - very dangerous but would never have expected someone to get sent off for them - this rule is not a bad thing - to believe that you have to hurt someone before you get punished is stupid (is attempted murder not punishable?) I agree that sometimes it looks like they're making it non-contact but this tackle was reckless and he was not in control at all - it looked 2 footed at full speed so the player had to go
I can see that and certainly wouldn't advocate going back to the "good" old days, but I think it would work better if refs had more of a decision to make and had to judge whether or not the player was in control, rather than the current rules which are just "oh, he was off the floor with both feet, he wasn't in control, red card."
I have to say if it was one of ours I'd have been disappointed too but I can also see why it was given. You just can't do 2 footed tackles anymore. Cattermole has been sent off for less
Watching live it was a red all day! The ref doesn't have slow motion vision. If it had been Catts doing the same tackle some on here would have wanted him lynching. And calling him a liability. Should we try for a Saint hood for Brede? Going by things being said about him he is beyond reproach.
Harsh, very harsh... ****s. Overpaid ****s.. Ego massaged by an expensive Swedish blonde, from Abba ****s,
It was a definite red in my opinion, and if he was two feet further forward he would have snapped Catts leg..if it had been the other way round, the Sky pundits would have been shouting for Catts to face criminal charges!
