I have to agree with you that Bill Nicholson is head and shoulders above anyone else when it comes to achievements as a Spurs manager, even if statistically he doesn't have the best record...

    Tottenham Hotspur Manager's Records & Statistics 1898-2012

...I doubt that Nicholson's haul of 8 major trophies will ever be matched by any other Spurs manager.

The quality of football has been awful , negative , tempo less for most part of the season so far.
Hence the constant booing and complaining .
    The people are revolting.

HI GP, I probably was a bit harsh on Billy Nick in my previous post, Roo wanted me to say something 'exciting' so I did me best. :)

Anyway, Billy Nick is definitely one of the all-time greats, though we agree not right up at the very top, he needed to win a European Cup or another title, to be a real contender for that.

Going to your larger point, all the managers of English clubs were acting under the same restraints as Billy Nick then. The big difference was Bill had far more money to spend them most of them, we were probably the biggest spending club for a while around the mid/late 50s and on for about 10 years. We could actually afford to buy one of the hottest properties in world football in Jimmy Greaves. Nowadays we wouldn't stand a chance - ironically he'd probably go to Chelsea the club we outbid for back then and indeed had got Greaves from, via a short detour to Milan.

Billy Nick is easily our best manager, and he is one of the greats, but his achievements don't stack up compared to the very top British managers of all time, but I thank your point, times have changed etc.

agreed 6061. As I say our best easily, even if people like Fergie with their 110 trophies or whatever do leave him in the shade. But not to knock Billy Nick, definitely an all-time great,

Spurs broke the British transfer record in January 1968 when we signed Martin Chivers from Southampton for £125,000 and again broke the record when we signed Martin Peters from West Ham United for £200,000 just over two years later.

Yep, as you indicate even after the mid 60s we kept on spending, which was a massive help for Bill. We don't come anywhere close to breaking transfer records these days.

You'll know better than me 6061, but didn't we break the British record in signing Jones and Blanchflower as well as Greaves, certainly all three were really massive deals in their day. Mackay too was a big money.

Indeed all of the 'world class' players in our sides of the early 60s were players bought in by us, usually for big fees. I think the only 'big-name player' to make it through our academy and be a home grown major success in Bill's sides was Perryman. and even he, though loved and revered at the Lane wasn't a big name outside our club. We had Baker and Henry of course, top top players, but not big names again

I'm afraid it's a bit of a criticism of Billy Nick that we didn't get our youth structure right in those days, preferring the quick fix of buying in stars. We did of course have one mega name to be in our youth ranks in Bill's time, Graeme Souness, and he walked out because he wasn't getting playing time, plus he was homesick etc.

My God, Souness and Hoddle imagine that, and both for free. What a coup that would have been.

Glenn of course broke through after Bill left, though he was there during Bill's time, but too young to be realistically considered for first team action. Souness being that bit older and probably physically more mature and stronger.

Nobody has come near Bill Nick . 2nd would be Arthur Rowe, 3rd Burkinshaw.
Bill and Keith had were backed by the board and it payed off with success.
You reap what you sow , unlike our present frugal owners.
