    Match Of The Decade.

A little something for the younger fans.

    Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3.

On 3 April 1996, Liverpool faced Newcastle United in a Premier League fixture at Anfield, during the 1995–96 season. Liverpool won the match, scoring four goals to Newcastle's three. The winning goal was scored by striker Stan Collymore in the second minute of stoppage time. Before the match, both clubs had lost their previous fixtures but still had a chance of winning the league and wanted to close the gap between themselves and leaders Manchester United. Newcastle United, who were 12 points ahead in January, had suffered from poor performance throughout March, winning one match out of four that month. Liverpool had won six of their last nine league games during February and March, scored the most goals and conceded the fewest until this match.

Liverpool started the match as the more promising team and striker Robbie Fowler scored the first goal. Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand scored the equaliser in the tenth minute and winger David Ginola added a second for Newcastle four minutes later. Fowler scored early in the second-half to reduce Newcastle's lead but Faustino Asprilla restored their goal advantage in the 57th minute. Stan Collymore, who set up the opening goal for Liverpool, equalised for Liverpool in the 68th minute. In stoppage time, Collymore scored his second goal of the match involving a one-two with Ian Rush and John Barnes in the build up. The winner sparked jubilant scenes for Liverpool supporters at Anfield and consigned Newcastle to their second consecutive defeat in the league, reducing their chances of winning the league.

The match is considered to be the best Premier League game in the history of the competition. Newcastle's manager Kevin Keegan described it as a "classic",[1] while Liverpool manager Roy Evans said "the entertainment value was up there with the best".[1] In 2003, the game was awarded the Match of the Decade award on behalf of the Premier League, which was celebrating its tenth anniversary. The result influenced the league championship; the leaders Manchester United lost only one more match that season and retained the title.[2]

It was a great game. However it pales into insignificance when placed alongside Istanbul

  5. Depends what you are looking for in a 'great game'.

For a neutral, the Liverpool v Newcastle game would have been better to watch. For us Liverpool fans, Istanbul was better because we was down in the dumps and couldn't feel any lower before hitting a ultimate high <ok>

    Note to younger fans:

Always ident paragraphs in freehand writing or use a clear line break for the internet.

Sorry, I was under the mistaken impression that this was the LIVERPOOL board on Not 606. Therefore, neutrals don't even have a say in it.

That's not the match of the decade, that's the match of the 90s. The match of the 00's was Liverpool 3- AC Milan 3( Liverpool winning on pens), and the match of the 10's was Manchester City 3 QPR 2 (okay so far).

The 4-4 cup draw derby in '91 was my favourite match of that decade. Had everything that game.

It was probably the only time you can remember when Everton had 11 good players and none of them where Manchester United rejects.

Dalglish chucked his hand in the next morning - which was the day that you kissed goodbye your chances of winning the title again......7th is 'fantastic' these days........oh well.

Success for Everton is 10 years without a trophy. It somehow managed to get Gollum a new contract. There's another reason, Betty Hotpots bastard son is so skint, he can't afford to sack him. A £2 coin was chucked onto the pitch at Woodison, people were unsure whether it was a missile or a takeover bid.

We've starred in most of the best games in each competiton.

Best Prem Game Ever: Us v Barcodes (think it was officially named as such too if I remember correctly)

Best FA Cup Final in recent moemory: Us v West Ham 2006.

Best UEFA Cup Final: Us v Alaves 2001.

Best European Cup Final: Us v Milan, Istanbul 2005. Obviously. (Think this was offically named as such too).

    Quite proud of that.
