Loved that goal - with the dentists chair celebration afterwards ! Poor old Gazza - what a waste of telent and a life ! And yes MLT should have been in that team - but i didnt resent the team for it just the management. I enjoyed that tournament and the England team's performance for once.

And Gazza was about an inch away from nicking a Golden Goal against Germany in the semi as well.

When he came sliding in on that cross - it WAS only an inch away from putting England into the final. Story of Gazza's life i guess.

As far as overhead kicks go, Rooney v City was better, and so was Rory Delap v Spurs. All Zlatan had to do was hit the target, as the keeper was stranded.

My favourite goal of all time is Marco Van Bastens incredible volley from the tightest of angles for Holland against USSR in the 1988 European Cup Final.

Nobody is ever going to convince me that Rooney's versus City wasn't a shinner Joe!

Best goal ever? Eder for Brazil v USSR 1982. That WC gave me the horn for football and that was the highlight for me.

It was the very bottom of his shin, so it pretty much went as intended. As for Brazil, what about 1970, Carlos Alberto?

CBK you are probably extremely correct there!

Joe, there are so many magic Brazilian moments it's hard to choose. Carlos Alberto's was certainly an absolute stoater. Jairzinho scored a very similar goal in the same WC I think. The Eder one is special for me though as I remember sitting up late to watch the game as a kid. Afterwards, I spent approximately 10 years trying to emulate it, unsuccessfully I probably don't need to add.

This is the best I've seen as far as Bicycle kicks go

There are so many goals similar to Rooney's. It isn't a unique goal in reality to be considered near one of the best

best overhead kick I've seen from an ENglish player is this

You have to take it into context. Quarter finals of the Wrodl cup at altitude, nearly came back to draw against the eventual champions. Yes that was a good England side as was the Italia 90 one.

Whenever I see that goal I think..........It's nearly as good as the Le Tiss Newcastle one....nearly being the operative word. I think the bit that sets them apart is the way Le Tiss took the ball from behind him and flicked it over his own head.

Poor keeping, but still. The last angle shows what he saw, or didn't see, to be more factually accurate.

I've got two to add to all these. Bobby Stokes's winner in the '76 Cup Final. What joy!! And to cheer up our friends at the other end of the M27, Sulley Muntari's penalty in the 2008 QF! I love it when our local clubs turn over Manchester United!! And how about Rickie Lambert's brace against Watford last season?

I think everyone who rails against that goal realises that he did shin it, and as such it is and excellent goal, but not a magical one - the type that Matty would occasionally deliver. Our own overpriced Rory Delap easily beat Rooney for contact with the ball, with his technique. But goals, it seems, are more about the celebrity, rather than the skill involved.

Without looking at the video, I'm betting the Eder goal is one of those swerving shots that only the Brazilians seemed capable of back then, when footballs were heavier but it had been a decade or so since they'd had laces.

EDIT: Yeah, swerving and dipping. Matty was able to do that sort of thing a decade later. Nowadays they all do it with the balloon ball.

MLT scored many goals better than Rooneys shanked shot against city, his goal is over hyped because of the media circus that follows Wayne and Man U,say for instance if a player from Yeovil or Doncaster scored a goal like that skysports would show it a couple of times then it would be forgotten but because its Wayne and Man U it's shown nearly every week.
And for me Di canios volley for west ham takes some beating.

Here's a compilation I found while looking for something else. There are some crackers in here, including some of those already mentioned. Sadly none from Le Tiss though:
