Lets not get mixed-up here.. Bale came to this club to develop into the type of professional we see today. His potential even at an early age was clear for everyone to see... Dempsey has come here as an established professional and international. He however, is clearly not earning his place in the current Spurs line-up, at the moment and IMO can not develop any further.
i'm prepaired to give both siggy and Dempsey a bit more timeto find their form, after all they have moved to Spurs, which is a huge step up for both of them.
Short memory Bajan? Bale was seen as a jonah and many many fans were calling for him to be dropped. He was the subject of much derision by large numbers of fans.
I wish more people had your reasonably positive point of view. The only period when AVB had anything resembling an intact squad he won. I thought Dempsey wouldn't be effective, and he hasn't been. He's just not the central midfielder Spurs need. He can play either side in a 4-3-3, but since he's not as good as either Lennon or Bale, the best he'll be here is an impact sub. But this isn't his fault. The lack of an effective CM isn't AVB's fault, either, it's Levy's, for starting negotiations for Moutinho about five minutes too late. The advantage of a 4-4-2 at this point is that it gets our best players on the field, which I think may be more important than anything else right now.
Were you surprised when we signed him RW&B and do you think having two Americans in the side has been good for Spurs image in the U.S. or is football too low profile there?
I was a little surprised, then figured he was brought in because of his history with Dembele. Only after that did I think, nice we've got two of the four or so best US players. Then my instinct was, no, not a good player for Spurs. My impression of him is mostly from the US team. Before its recent decline, the US was a very mediocre team that did one thing truly brilliantly, which was counter. Any change of possession, the ball went down the field as fast as it possibly could, the passes led Dempsey or Donovan into space perfectly, and one or both would get a shot off before the defenders could get back. All of it like clockwork. The problem is, while Spurs do counter a lot, Dempsey isn't the first, second, or third target, so what he can do well he doesn't get a chance to do. Football interest in the US is like some kind of big machine getting under way. It is moving significantly, it will eventually be racing, but the acceleration rate is still pretty slow. Little things are very tell-tale, like PL scores crawling across the bottom of NFL games, and some Sunday afternoon network broadcasts. I haven't sensed huge growth in US Spurs fans, but I'm sure there's been a steady growth. The US is a country of front runners, so most will go with whoever seems to be winning.
I went to a Bar recently in Nicosia Cyprus that was entirely dedicated to Spurs. The Bar was owned by Russians, maybe inherited from a former Cypriot Spurs fan owner, but a little strange nevertheless.
I was in Larnaca , Cyprus a few weeks back , the bar on the seafront "The Meeting Place" was owned by Two Greek Cypriot brothers who are die hard Lilly whites . The bar has the odd logo of other teams but 80% is Spurs stuff . During the Chelsea game the bar was 98% spurs . The owners and Larnaca fans were not to happy with our lack of investment in the team and selling our best players. There opinion not just mine.
Sounds like you went on holiday Sidney, much prefer your story, sounds like Spurf has gone to meet some spy's!...always thought there was something odd about him!
I did see a (I kid you not) Gold Plated Range Rover with a Russian name in place of the badge, spies no! More money in other activities these days.
I was in Larnaca a couple of years ago too. Watched the 2 games vs Madrid and the 3-3 against Arsenal in that exact bar. Some very passionate Cypriots!
Maybe Spurf is using Cyprus for money laundering activities with his rich Russian mates. I hear a lot of these bars have a lot of extras , if you get my meaning. Maybe on the plus side, Spurf is negotiating as a go between for a generous Russian takeover.
...don't you like your name in Russian! As Sidney is now alluding too, there's more to your trips to Cyprus than meets the eye, I've known you on here a few yrs now and its not the first time you've been out there!
No.. not short memory at all Spurf., I just happened not to be one of them. So I'm entirely within my rights to have said what I said..
