i joined the royal navy in 1975,went to the falklands in 1982,in my wildest imagination i didnt think i would end up in a war. i lost several mates. i wear a poppy as i have that choice, if you dont want to, fair enough, but there is allso the option of the white poppy and a to a cpl of you that have made rather childish and incorrect statements ,show your parents what you have posted and the poppy appeal was started by an american woman

J McClean is Catholic and has a strong belief that Rep Ireland and Northern Ireland are just basically Ireland.

The British forces we're in Belfast/N. Ireland to make sure that wasn't going to be the case, so I'm not surprised he refused the poppy.

As an English catholic from Republican Irish heritage, who spent the past 4 years in Belfast I think I'm fairly well placed to comment on this and in my opinion its ****ing pathetic!

No he shouldn't be forced to wear it, but Irish died in both wars and many prominent Republicans still went and fought facism...To decline this simple symbol of respect is as short sighted as a Mackem refusing to eat sugar puffs - Northern Ireland is not the country it was, the British army do not make their presence felt and the PSNI (police) and Prison services are attacked by REPUBLICANS in spite of their efforts to become more cross-community...British soldiers killed innocent people, this is true, but The CIRA murdered a Catholic Policeman (who's family I personally know), because he was Catholic, they murdered a prison warden (weeks ago) for simply doing his job.

I don't think anyone's political views should be comprimised, but as a representative of a club and footballing community that is recognised globally, showing a little bit of respect for the views of others is not much to ask!

MASSIVE sweeping (and in my opinion ridiculous) statement!

What about people who have little or no other opportunity of work? What about people who's family heritage is based in the arms forces? What about people who want to see more of the world but don't have the means to do so? What about people who want to work for the UN? I have a fair few friends who're in the armed forces ALL of them joined because they wanted a career and come from a region with very few job opportunities. The number of people who currently claim job seekers allowance in Bishop Auckland has gone up by 400% in the past year...One of my best mate's is currently in Afghanistan, should something happen to him, he would deserve respect as a human being at the very ****ing least!

Having read your further posts - I dare you to call me simple, suggest I lack morality or conscious and engage me on any of my comments!

The decision to join the forces isn't justified by the fact that the alternative is the dole. Nor is it justified by any of the other reasons you mentioned.
Any reason you join up for is still ultimately to support goverment sanctioned murder. It's disgusting behaviour, and something I can't support.

If people genuinely wanted to honour veterans then they'd stop trying to make new ones.

He's well known in NI as an uneducated bigot, a shining example of those who are counter productive to integration.

I believe myself to be a liberal person, I do not support the war in Iraq or Afghanistan and believe it is a poorly veiled attempt to ensure Western oil ventures are protected. But that's not the troops fault. What of soldiers who joined up in times of peace? Did they specifically say "I want to go and shoot arabs in the head"? I very much doubt that! You tar every single soldier with the same narrow minded brush. You seem to have very strong views and fail to see any other side of the argument - even going as far as to imply its a shame that men and women killed in the current conflict should not be mentioned in the same sentence as soldiers from a previous generation? I'm sorry that's ridiculous! Human life is human life - REGARDLESS of situation, occupation or generation!

And saying that unemployment is not a justification? 1) A justification of what exactly? Of 'government sanctioned murder'? Once again, a massive assumption that all soldiers have/will kill in their service and 2) Name me another career that people from our region (with little or no qualifications) can get into?

And you can say that Soldiers put themselves in a position to kill - so do Policemen in America, security guards in Uganda, Doctors in countries that allow euthanasia...Putting yourself into an industry doesn't make you a killer - killing someone does!
