Former Newcastle forward Faustino Asprilla claims he has spoken to the club about a return in a coaching role.

The former Colombia international, now 42, is fondly remembered by fans on Tyneside after a two-year spell as a player with the club in the 1990s which was most notable for a hat-trick in a 3-2 Champions League win over Barcelona.

He told the Sun: "A year ago I spoke with Newcastle's owners about bringing over players from my coaching school (in Colombia). It didn't happen due to some requirements of the English league but then, during informal meetings with fans, I said I'd be interested in returning.

"That encouraged the owners and three months ago they invited me over.

"I'm motivated and like the city. I often accompany the team when they are travelling in England.

"It is a significant opportunity and hopefully something will materialise."

Maybe. I'd be interested if there was evidence his coaching was going well (which there may well be).

I don't think roles should be filled due to 'connections' or sentimentality though. Appoint him if he's the best person for the job, I'm sure there are other people who are just as qualified (or better) and we would be running the club incorrectly (in my opinion) if we overlooked them in favour of someone who was a good player for us.

    Top player though!!

Agree 100% he should have to prove his credentials first.

But if he is good enough for the job it could be a good link to South America, and particularly Colombia a country i think is not recognised enough for its footballing talent. Players like Guarin (find his goal on youtube vs Brazil at youth level and you'll understand why i love this player), James Rodrigeuz have slipped under the radar coming out of Colombia in recent years and both are world class players. Freddy G (Guarin) now plyes his trade at Inter and James is on the cusp of becoming one of the best attacking midfielders at Porto and in my opinon will be better than any in the EPL.

Good contact to have and provided he has the right qualifications and work ethic he'll always be welcome back.

Faustino. Can we have him to scout for talent in Colombia/ South America? I am not too confident in his coaching abilities... He himself has been much of an enigma, frighteningly inconsistent..
