Oddy, the Birdsville Cup carnival is run just after the Melbourne Cup. Next year it'll be on Wednesday and Thursday. As for getting there, it's a nightmare. You can fly in by small plane, (and I mean small) rent a car or take a coach. Depends on how much you want to spend. You'll need a tent.
