Simple question, Forget all about personal feelings to individuals, everyone on here loves the saints. Southampton footbal club is not about individuals and never has been, had Le Tiss left us for another all them years ago would any of you changed your football club to follow him, no you wouldn't. We all support the best team in the world and more than likely for different reasons. I started supporting them when my uncle used to take me to the dell, i used to be in the archers road end all the young kids got pushed to the front so we could look over the 3 foot wall and i have been hooked ever since. So we did hit rock bottom, and Nigel has got us back to where i believe we belong, now we are here it would be criminal to give it all up so easily and i do love Nigel and he is in my top 3 favourite saints managers in my lifetime. The others being Strachan and Nicholl (only cause he was in charge when i first started going to the dell). I know there are no dead certs in football, but is it wrong of me to want our football club to do everything in their power to ensure the stability and ongoing future progression that NA and NC have laid the foundations for. If this means looking for a new leader to be able to move on to the next level then so be it, as much as i love and respect NA i want our football club to achieve its ambitions as complex free as possible, but more importantly i want the future of our football club to be assured, and there is no guarentee of that in any league but our club would be at greater risk not being in the premiership. So simple question should our personal feelings towards Adkins cloud our judgement as performances and results to date are simply not good enough. (i will be singing only one nigel adkins at the top of my voice on sat before people start slamming me on here for having a slightly different opinion)
IMHO . We should stick with NA even IF we get relegated this season . I Cannot see that happening ( Kepping him I mean ) , but for ONCE in recent years it would be good to see a Club / Chairman give the manger the LONGTERM support he needs . I have said it before and I will say it again , no harm long term in being the next Boing Boing team ( Hoping we CAN come straight back up , NOT saying we will ) .
Consistency is key. Interesting that you mention the unfortunate Chris Nicholl. His sacking was a real blow to me. We'd shown great sense in keeping managers - Ted Bates and then Lawrie prior to this, and suddenly we fitted a revolving door on the office and/or showed no faith in our managers (WGS was treated very shabbily in my view). Adkins is a good manager. Changing manager is not going to make Danny Fox into a world class left back or ensure that Morgan closes down more rapidly.
I tell you what if stability and yo yoing were going to be guarenteed then i would accept relegation as an option. Unforunatly they are not and with the divide between the premiership and football league being even larger next season then it worries me. I am probably wrong again but since we got relegated every team apart fom west brom, sunderland, newcastle and west ham have struggled after being relegated.
i was only a kid then but i loved how we played under nicholl and when the big boys came to town they were scared ****less and more often than not we would turn them over.
Agree with all this. We should only lose Nigel for something better and I'm not convinced that is available!
How can you talk of stability in the same sentence as 'looking for a new leader'? Contradiction? I'm getting close to just answering 'YAWN' on all these attempts by a few to 'convince' others that the 'Nigel love in' should end. It's looking increasingly desperate. Sometimes in all walks of life there is something that happens. Might not even be something amazing. It can be the smallest thing but you sort of know its something special. Well when I listened to Adkins' press conference today. I am all smiles. When I hear the speculation that he might be gone I feel upset. When I hear the crowd sing 'One Nigel Adkins' I feel close to tears. I am a grown man. I have seen managers come and go. Adkins is the best thing to happen to Southampton since the eighties (barring Liebherr's takeover) I have no allegiance to him. I don't know him. I've never been upset when a manager left before (Hoddle, Strachan) it was 'oh well hope the next one is good'. Something very diffferent with Adkins though. I would be very upset if he went. I don't know why but I would. Cannot explain it.
Great post! The only time I've been upset about a manager leaving was Lawrie Mac going to Sunderland after the 1984-5 season. We had some good ones after that but no-one actually achieved anything except survival until Nigel came along. He is the complete package, intelligent, passionate, poetic, and committed. Long may he stay with us!
I disagree we all get upset when a manager who has done well for us leaves the fact of the matter is another manager comes in and we move on and forget how upset we were.
nope. I said that above. this is different. I wasn't upset when hoddle or strachan left and they both did pretty well. Pee'd off a bit but not upset. Just awaited the announcement of the next 'name'. If you really support Adkins like you keep statement then why these constant 'persuasive' posts and threads on why he should go? or what is better for the club? If as you state you will singing the man's name on Saturady then stop the backstabbing. One or the other. On the bus or waiting for the next one.
I disagree. Pardew was successful, he turned the team around and won us a new coat of paint. But he was no way near as endearing as Nigel, he doesn't have that same glowing inspiration and passion for life. I think Nigel is an outstanding role model - I have learnt a lot just from listening to him speak - and for me this makes him special and is why we are so lucky to have him on board.
I am an Southampton supporter and i respect what Nigels done and love the way he comes across, I for one am not blinded by my love for nigel in that he should be allowed to continue at the cost of the football club. I hope to god we win our next 2 games cause there is nothing more i would like than saints to be playing premiership football with nigel in charge. However should we lose saturday and then again at QPR i will be first in line demanding Nigel leaves. As much as i love the man i love the club more.
An interesting point because it was at this time that Mr Woodford left the cluband he was replaced as chairman by Guy Askham who had some interesting ideas of his own about how a football club should be run. Sadly for us they were crap ideas and our club started a downhill momentum from that moment onwards.
I agree. Far too many posts basically saying "I like Adkins but....." to be convincing that he doesn't want Adkins kicked out. I am completely with you ImpsSaint
I don't want Nigel to stay because he got us to here, he plays attacking football, he's just a really nice guy. I want him to stay because he is the best man to get us out of the bottom three. That other stuff is just the icing on top. 28 games left.
Ok so i'm not allowed to like someone as a person, but question their ability in their work place. Didn't realise it worked like that sorry. ignore all my threads about liking adkins but questioning if he was the right man for us at this level as i have no foundation. Mods please delete all my threads.
you read on here people saying things like NA has lost the players respect, total bollocks. We have a team that 30% are not good enough for this league, and the subs bench is a bit of a joke. NA can only do so much and he has the same vision as NC, it would take the club backwards if he got the sack.
Best if you did edit and delete, I think the mods have enough work on their plate. Know what you mean though.
I think Adkins is an exceptional man and football manager. If he leaves because of temporary problems, we will see him at another club achieving success.
