For those of you who would prefer to stand when watching a game the FSF's Safe Standing Campaign is looking for help from fans. The aim is to persuade the Government, football authorities and football clubs to accept the case for introducing, on a trial basis, limited sections of standing areas at selected grounds in the stadiums of Premier League and Championship football clubs. Why can't they just have a petition on the Govt website so that if it gets over 100,000 signatures, it gets debated in parliament? Their petition is more like a recruitment policy for the Federation and has put me right off.
I spent many years down The Dell getting icy feet and aching legs. Not being able to see because there was always someone in the way at the awkward moment. I'll stick with the seat and leaping out of it when we score, thank you very much. You people get as many signatures as you can. Just don't expect to pay less for the ticket..!
As well as signing the FSF petition, please take a minute (that really is all it takes) to use this simple tool to e-mail your MP and urge them to support EDM 573, which calls on the government to allow trials of safe standing areas. Hi CBK, it's a fair question and there's a fair answer. At the time the FSF petition was launched safe standing was already on the Parliamentary agenda via Don Foster's Private Members Bill on Safe Standing. Therefore a petition asking them to debate it in the House of Commons was a but pointless as they already were! Since then we've also worked with Roger Godsiff MP on his Early Day Motion (EDM) 573 which backs a safe standing trial. Unlike many other orgs, we do manage to get these issues on to the Parliamentary agenda so using that petition site isn't really necessary for the FSF. However, there were advantages to hosting a petition on the FSF website. Firstly, it allowed us to demonstrate support among fans while also helping us contact fans subsequently, asking them to carry out further actions such as lobbying their MP. We wouldn't be able to do that via the petition page you mention. This has a positive impact on the Safe Standing Campaign which is what we all want at the end of the day. Having said that, if you don't want the FSF to contact you that's absolutely your prerogative but we do hope you still contact your MP asking them to back EDM 573 in support of safe standing.
