As many people are aware, those that gamble are a superstitous bunch and whilst some don't hold any superstitions, many of us do. I would like to hear what your one is or if you know of anyone that has any one that is unusual or funny like carrying their lucky pen to the bookies because they can't win without it!

I will get the ball rolling, when i started betting in the bookies if i had 2 or 3 bets done out and my 1st selection lost i would instantly rip up that docket and switch my bets for later to another pocket(i know, i need help) , now i don't know why i started that but it's something i still continue to do to this very day, the main thing is i get that lost docket away from the rest.

Hopefully you guy's have some better ones or funny ones to add..

At the risk of sexism here, though it is a valid superstition for me,I have never backed and never will back a horse ridden by a female jockey when she is riding against her male counterparts !

Sorry, but that is the truth of the matter !

Never back for or lay your own football team.
Always act on dreams if there's the opportunity. They've come in for me before but can go spectacularly wrong. The worst one one was 1990 when I was working at the FA Cup final. the night before I dreamt that I turned up at Wembley late and the manager said "well make sure you're on time on Thursday night of the replay - it was a 3-3 draw". I wnet into the bookie and had a cheeky fiver on it- if only Extra Time had counted <steam>

I used to put winning slips in the same pocket and not tell people my selection ect but frankly it's a load of ****.

I sometimes think that being an obsessive fan of a football club can you put you in a strong position as long as you can detach your passion for a few moments.

I have made a right few quid this year backing against my team..sentiment and gambling should never be bedfellows...I actually sided with them last night and they won.

I honestly don't have any superstitions when it comes to punting...It's difficult enough without adding non evidence based variables!

Good thread Humans..always interesting to enter the minds of others.

I've had loads of different football based superstitions, and a few racing ones as well, but every single one of em has failed me, to the point that I can no longer remember what behaviours are lucky and which are unlucky. Suffice to say I have exhausted all possible routes to St Marys stadium from my mum's house, and watched races from every conceivable vantage point at Cheltenham, and I'm still skint and well accustomed to defeat.

One of my younger brothers stopped watching races if he was losing. Sometimes he'd lean up against a cement pylon under the grandstand. Always the same post too. :)

Thanks so far guy's, some good ones there. Yeah, i also agree on the football team part, if i'm backing, i alway's look out for who they are against and back them..because it's win/win. If they lose your bet is looking good and if they win, well then it's another 3 points on the board and are relatively satisfied :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I am tempted to have a large bet at 6/4 on my team Sheffield Wednesday to beat Blackpool tonight as they are managerless and in disarray and we are on the way back !

Sadly, superstition means I can never back them and this has been a lifelong thing ever since I backed them to win a match I was present at and we drew so I said then...."never again" !

Help yourselves in the meantime !

Actually almost everyone i know tries to avoid backing their own team most of the time, unless of course the odds are more favourable, people view it as a jinx, i alway's said to not be so daft, but after getting let down by my team a few times i have become a believer too but it's still just superstition, of course us backing our team doesn't affect the way the team performs..or does it?! Any Noetic scientist experts wanna say anything <whistle>

My Arsenal supporting mate regularly backs Spurs to win in the hope his money will jinx them. Happened a fair few times actually!

As Jimmy Greaves used to say...."It's a funny old game" !!
