http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/new-chelsea-race-row-club-1411188 A picture has emerged that appears to show a Chelsea fan making a monkey gesture towards Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck during the Capital One Cup match on Wednesday night. The game was the second time the two sides had faced each other at Stamford Bridge in just four days, after Sunday's controversial 3-2 win for United on Sunday. In that Premier League game referee Mark Clattenburg sent off Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres for Chelsea, and was afterwards accused of using "inappropriate language" towards some of the Blues players. The Gosforth official is alleged to have told midfielder Jon Obi Mikel “Shut up, you monkey”. But the Blues withdrew claims that Clattenburg also called Juan Mata a “Spanish t**t” during the explosive top flight encounter. Clattenburg is furious at the accusations. The 37-year-old insists he is innocent and is considering his legal position. It was against this febrile atmosphere that the two sides prepared to face each other again on Wednesday night, this time in the Capital One Cup. It was another thrilling match, which eventually finished 5-4 in extra time. But this morning a picture emerged which appears to show one supporter making a racist gesture. United striker Welbeck can be seen in the same shot. Chelsea have yet to comment on the image. In June a Liverpool fan was banned from football grounds for four years after being found guilty of racial abuse when he made the same gesture towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra Phillip Gannon, 58, who was seen on live television doing a racially offensive monkey impression during a match at Anfield in January, was barred from attending Liverpool and England games or being in Liverpool city centre on match days. Liverpool Magistrates' Court also fined him £180 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £300. The incident happened amid a volatile atmosphere at Anfield on January 28 this year when the two sides met in an FA Cup fourth round clash. It was the first game between the Premier League rivals since an eight-match ban was imposed on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing Mr Evra. In the 23rd minute of the game the TV camera panned over fans in the lower Centenary Stand, where Gannon was sitting with two friends, and he was seen to position his hands under his armpits. The coverage, broadcast worldwide by ITV, quickly spread across social networking site Twitter and complaints were made to police, the court heard. --------------------- It's always them isn't it. Horrible club and horrible fans.
all this **** is really making me lose interest in football in general at the moment. Serbia, Chelsea, Terry, Clattenburg, fans etc etc. Its disgusting. For the first time in 20 years i actually didn't even realise Spurs were playing last night (sorry Spurs, sorry sorry sorry sorry).
That picture's been doing the rounds on Twitter too. F*cking disgrace. If he's found out, he'll no doubt try and say he had an itch under both armpits the pathetic c*nt. In regards to Clattenburg, he's a crap ref but I don't believe he's a racist. Chelsea are just trying to push negative attention elsewhere, a shame their fans are too dumb and bring it straight back at them. Like you say, horrible club and horrible fans.
I don't see the need to highlight these things when it's only one person and no one actually notices at the time. Get Chelsea to work out who he is quietly and stick a ban on him from all British stadiums. Racist idiots will be racist idiots and I'm sure there's fans going to every ground in the country with unacceptable views and so when they **** up like this just deal with them in private and let us talk about football instead.
Chelsea are trying to assert themselves to a United style position where refs are **** scared of upsetting them imo.
Sorry but I completely disagree. Naming and shaming them is the best way to stop these thugs acting like that at football matches and will give other wannabe thugs food for thought too.
I truly hope that the FA and the law come down hard on both CFC and its racist fans for the racist 5hite that they continue to pollute football with. I am particularly galled at the lies that have been told against Clattenberg. Anyone who believe that he would have called any player "a monkey" is as stupid as the Chelsea players who are making the accusation. I also hope that Clattenberg sues the arse off the perpetrator for as much libel damages. It is going to be a very dangerous turn of events if players can now make damning accusations against refs, merely because they didn't get the result they wanted. It does have to be said, that Chelsea is now over-taking 'Pool as the joke club of English football.
Of course it should be highlighted. Of course these clubs should be made to feel embarrassed. Of course these racist bastards should think that if they are not careful they will get their arses handed to them by a bunch of ethnics on the street thanks to tv exposing them as being racists. We can't concentrate on football when there are racists brave enough to let you know they hate coloured people. I'm with Spurm on this...football is a put off of late unless the authorities embarass these individuals and clubs from where they come since the clubs themselves seem inept in dealing with things.
He's not a thug, he's a racist idiot. I just don't see how it's interesting or relevant that one racist idiot has gone to a match and acted like a racist idiot. You're not going to totally stop there being these racism from idiots acting on their own at a football match any more than you're going to stop it in society as a whole. The things that should be newsworthy are racist chanting from a decent proportion of the crowd or when someone on the pitch is alleged to have done it, other than that we should be concentrating on the game rather than lapping up this stupid sideshow created when some nobody is spotted acting being a racist fool.
New Racism 'Row' for Chelsea I thought Chelsea were introducing a new line of seats at the front for them!...they could call it the national front! please log in to view this image
Drogs we don't think all Chelsea fans are racist. I can understand you saying what you did. I believe it is just as important to know these kind of people exhist in everyday life. Keeps my radar on alert for a start.
So which will happen first - their made-up allegations towards Clattenberg suddenly go away, or the Serbian FA get wind of the story and milk it for all they're worth?
So you think one guy being racist isn't newsworthy? Obviously I'd rather hear about football than racism as well but until it stops happening at games then it will always be newsworthy imo.
Yes, most of the time it isn't. I'm sure there are many racist incidences that go to court every year that don't involve football, should they all be in the papers and on the TV too? Or if it's just football, what about if someone was racist at a Crawley Town match over the weekend, would you expect that to be on all the backpages instead of actual sports stories?Whether it's at Stamford Bridge, Broadfield Stadium or down the pub it's no different to me, it's unfortunate but you can't account for ignorant fools. When the person in question holds significant responsibility or is in the public eye it becomes newsworthy, or when there's a significant number of fans involved as it then becomes a problem for the club as they are expected to control groups of fans.
I think if a group of people were doing it then I'd agree Spurlock! But one mindless bonehead should 't tarnish s all. We should hand him a life time ban and move on.
its a global phenomena is football. It should be highlighted so that everyone tuning in knows that it is an issue. I enjoy reading football gossip, global round up etc etc.....and im sure millions of others do. A racist incident takes place in a little place like say Huddersfield. The local newspaper will highlight it, maybe the local radio station. So most incidents are highlighted. Everyone is entitled to go to a sporting event. So in everyones interest it is highlighted so we can make our choice. Not everyone visits a certain town every week..but the residents that always abode there are informed more times than not.
