Stats can be misleading, but Jonas plays a big part in our team.

 

NUFCfans are just **** stirrers. They'll try and put a negative slant on every little bit of news (or make **** up) just to get hits

 

Personally, I think it's fairly obvious what Jonas gives to the team, I think he actually works better in the 4-3-3 these days (thought he was one of our only good players vs WBA) as he doesn't quite have the same pace to get forward.

Pardew seems to see him as one of the first names on the team sheet, and I don't blame him, you don't need stats to see what he gives to the team. Though I can understand some people's opinion if they want him to provide more attacking thrust (ooo err) - for me, that's not his game any more.

 

Not surprising for me. He is flexible, gives 110% and is an excellent squad member. As Mr Cantona pointed out, every team needs water carriers. I understand the concerns about a winger who doesn't create that much when he plays wide, but he tends to have a very attacking full back behind him. Ji Sung Park never created loads for Man U but there was a good reason Fergie kept him around so long. I can see a scenario where he maybe gets less game time in the future. Certainly I'd like to see Tom Ince or that type to broaden our scope, but there'll always be games whereby he can have a crucial role for the team. And that is the top and bottom of it, he's a fantastic team player and never moans about sacrificing himself.

 

At the risk of over simplification, people who slate Jonas concentrate on what he lacks as a winger: final ball, crossing, goals, etc. Jonas supporters focus on what he brings as a midfielder: energy, grit, possession, tackles (not to mention free kicks won).

 

If we were going to switch Jonas out, I'd rather see Sammy or Fergie get the position rather than bringing someone new in

 

I think Fergie is the pure wingeer that the Jonas slaters would like to see. Nice option to have.

 

I think we need all types of options to be honest and should be looking to improve. I think Ferguson is an excellent option in a 442. He could also be effective as a wing back. Could I see him as effective in a 433 with Benni one side of a striker, and him the other. Probably not. At present we have Obertan for that. In truth I don't see him cutting it and if someone gave me the option to offload him and bring an Ince type, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Sammy is probably another for the 433 but he has a fair bit to learn about the game at present. There is something to work with but his decision making is a long way from the required level in my opinion.

 

Jonas isn't really a winger. He's more suited to a defensive/holding midfield role. Even when he's playing LW he's always covering defensively.

 

I think the point is he is versatile. He's not a winger, he's not a holding midfielder. He's a guy who can play in a variety of positions and bring different options to each role. People get too weighed down with pigeon holing what a certain role should be. Sometimes you need an all out attacking winger, sometimes you need a Jonas type winger. Sometimes you need a Tiote type holder, sometimes you'll need what Jonas brings to that role. The modern game is about covering all bases and being adaptable. I can't think of many better suited to that type of squad system than Jonas.

 

When he's playing as a winger, I don't think you can call people "Jonas slaters" for noticing he's not great at being one. We've mostly matched up 4-4-2 this season, with Jonas operating as winger, which isn't good for him or us. I wouldn't call people "Cisse slaters" if Pardew decided he'd be playing at RB and didn't do it very well. In my opinion, the only time he should be anywhere near a 4-4-2 is when we are struggling for LB cover or Pardew is concerned about a specific RW threat, otherwise the formation is a bit stodgy and ineffective attacking-wise.

Every fan is aware of his strengths, and they point specifically to DM/WB than in wing-play. Players like Jonas allow "tactical flexibility" (the new buzz word all fans must say to win nods of approval from their mates apparently), but if he's going to play it should only be because he's more suited to the role than whoever else is in contention. At present, if Pardew insists on 4-4-2 against West Ham say, I'd suggest Ferguson needs to start. Against Liverpool, Jonas will probably be more useful to counter Suarez et al.

Your points are valid. I was tryng to make a point that how good you think Jonas is depends to a large degree on what your focus on. Perhaps I didn't do it very well.

As has been stated we all know what Jonas does, or rather did for the team.

In my opinion, of late, Jonas hasn't been performing well enough to warrant his place in the side. He looks slow, weak in a tackle, he loses the ball alot more than he used to and he's not winning free-kicks as often as he used to. When you run this alongside he doesn't create anything and never really has. I struggle to see why he's picked, then I look at who else could play instead of him and realise why Pardew insists on picking him.

There's no denying Jonas doesn't look out of place in most positions but he rarely gives outstanding performances anymore and there's other players that could be giving better performances whilst gaining experience.

In summary, Jonas is the type of player that consistantly gives an average performance, never plays dreadfully but never plays outstanding. Whereas, comparing him to say Perch nowadays. He can play at a comfortable level, doesn't really have stinkers anymore and can also throw in a blinder every few games.

Jonas's time has been and gone, he should be used as a bit part utility player. Simple
