Ok, so I'm an old git - compared to some anyway. Who here remembers Ceefax and Teletext ? The early forerunner to the internet has finally been switched off. A brilliant piece of simple technology that gave people reams of live information at their finger tips. For anybody under the age of 35 trust me, this was groundbreaking stuff. I remember being a young whippersnapper dialing in the famous page 3O2 for the football news. I also remember dialing in page 316 for the live scores on matchdays when I couldn't attend. I remember waiting for the page to change to see if Arsenal had scored, with huge anticipation. Anyone else here an old Ceefax geek ?
Lol, also remember waiting for those pages to change when checking the scores. Would use it every 2 minutes when we were playing and then go mental when it has Bergkamp (23) or something.
That's the one Although when I was using Ceefax it was more like Smith, Merson or Groves lit up in those little green letters. If your game wasn't on the radio, this was the only way to keep up with the scores.
It was great. You'd sit there for 90 mins watching the scores. Dull as **** until your team got one. Nice credit to the Magic Man though Piskie. Well done.
310 (then moved to 313) was the best page as it had all the little tidbits of news in a no nonsense way. "Italy awarded 1990 World Cup", nuff said. Now we get all sorts of waffle. 601-4 for TV sched, and 610 I think for films on tv with plot synopsis. It was Oracle on ITV, later renamed to something else, obviously Fat Larry Ellison didn't think he was getting as much publicity out of sponsoring ITV teletext service. ITV football pages were 130, or was it 140. Used to get annoyed in the summer when Cricket was given the prime 302-340 slot. Life was much simpler pre-internet.
For some reason my only memory of teletext was watching out for the goals vs Derby at home and going mental when it annnounced that Emmanuel Petit scored his first goal for Arsenal and wht proved to be the winner......
Great service, I'd always be checking updates on it and waiting painfully for the pages to change and scores to update! Rest in Peace you lovely 300 pages...
I'd forgotten about that News page! and wasn't there entertainment on 400, and a page with jokes on it?
